How Paint and Thinner change the world
The magic brush lets Mickey reshape the environment. Paint is the restorative, constructive choice; Thinner removes or alters things. Painting path elements or thinning obstacles can change the environment and shift the narrative, according to the publisher’s game description and mobile launch announcement.
When you reach an interactive object or route, read its prompt and consider what result you want before choosing a brush action. Don’t assume every surface accepts either action: use the prompt and observe what changes.
Controls vary by platform
Controller, keyboard-and-mouse, and touchscreen layouts are different. Even controller button names differ between PlayStation and Xbox, and bindings may vary by device or game version. Treat the on-screen prompts and the settings in your installed build as the final authority.

Controller basics
Secondary controller references describe the broad categories: a left stick for movement, a right stick for camera, triggers for Paint and Thinner, and bumpers for Sketch and Guardians. A stick press may handle lock-on. Jump, Dash, Ground Pound, and Spin Attack use face buttons, but their exact button assignments depend on the controller layout. Keyboard and mouse basics
A June 2025 PC guide lists WASD for movement, arrow keys for camera, Space for Jump, Shift for Dash, Ctrl for Sprint, Q for Ground Pound, E for Spin Attack, mouse buttons for Thinner and Paint, R for Sketch, 4 for Guardians, and Esc for Pause. These are a starting reference, not a guaranteed mapping for every build. The guide reports that most controls can be changed under Game Settings > Input; check whether those options are present in your version. Mobile touchscreen
The iOS and Android release became available on September 17, 2026. Its publisher describes touch controls optimized for painting, thinning, and platforming, but does not provide a button-by-button layout in the cited announcement. Follow the touchscreen instructions shown by the installed app; controller and keyboard mappings do not describe the mobile layout. See the mobile release announcement.
A practical beginner learning order
- Try Paint and Thinner deliberately. Think of Paint as restore/create and Thinner as remove/alter. Use the nearby prompt to guide the choice.
- Separate aiming from movement. Practice moving Mickey, adjusting the camera, and aiming the brush as distinct actions. Their inputs differ by platform.
- Add movement skills after the basics. The console and PC release includes Dash, Ground Pound, and Sprint, alongside Spin Attack. Learn each from its prompt or control settings instead of trying to use every move while still learning the brush.
- Check bindings when an input is unclear. On PC, look in Game Settings > Input for available remapping options. On mobile, follow the app’s touch instructions; on a controller, use the on-screen button prompts.
Which version’s controls are relevant to you?
The original console and PC version launched on September 24, 2024, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
