Choose an authenticator app or SMS
Sony offers two 2SV methods: an authenticator app or a text message to your registered mobile number. An authenticator app requires access to the configured app and device; SMS requires access to the registered number and a working mobile connection. Sony’s guide gives Authy, Google Authenticator, and Microsoft Authenticator as examples, not an exhaustive list or endorsement. Its support pages do not provide comparative security measurements for the two methods.
2SV adds a code check after your account password. Sony describes it this way: “By activating 2-Step Verification, we’ll add a second layer of security to your account.” (Sony PlayStation 2-step verification overview.)
Enable 2SV in Account Management online
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management and open Security.
- Next to 2-step Verification Status, select Edit.
- Choose Authenticator App or Text Message.
- If you choose an authenticator app, scan the QR code with the app. If scanning does not work, enter the alphanumeric code shown on screen into the app. If you choose SMS, enter your mobile number.
- Enter the verification code from the selected method, then choose Activate.
- Save the backup codes shown during setup somewhere secure and accessible if you lose your phone.
Enable 2SV from a console
You can also start setup in the console settings. Select a method and complete the verification prompts on screen.

On PS5
- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- Select a verification method and follow the prompts to activate it.
- Save the backup codes when prompted.
On PS4
- Go to Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- Select a verification method and follow the prompts to activate it.
- Save the backup codes when prompted.
Menu wording can vary with software updates or regional localization. Sony’s setup guide covers the online, PS5, and PS4 flows.
What to expect when signing in
After activation, you still sign in with your account password and sign-in ID, then provide a verification code when prompted. Sony says a code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt; if it expires, select Resend Code. Sony lists prompts at the first sign-in after activation, after you manually sign out, when you reset your account password, and when you change your sign-in ID (email address) or online ID.

Save and use your backup codes
Sony says you can view backup codes in Account Management under Security > Backup Codes, but you cannot check them online if you cannot sign in. Keep the codes somewhere secure and separate from your phone so they remain useful if that device or number is unavailable.
Sony’s US troubleshooting instructions state that an account has 10 backup codes and each can be used once. At the sign-in prompt, choose the backup-code option and enter an unused code. If all codes have been used, Sony says you can obtain new ones by turning 2SV off and activating it again. See Sony’s 2SV troubleshooting guide.

If you cannot receive a code or access your phone
SMS code did not arrive
For a missing text, Sony recommends selecting Resend Code, waiting a few minutes, restarting your phone, and checking that airplane mode is off and mobile signal is available. If the problem continues, contact your mobile carrier about network issues. If those steps do not help, use PlayStation’s Online Assistant.
Phone and backup codes are unavailable
If you cannot access your registered phone or number and do not have backup codes, Sony directs you to the Online Assistant to restore account access. Because Sony says backup codes cannot be viewed online without signing in, recovery through support is the stated route when both the phone and saved codes are unavailable.

Passkeys are a separate sign-in option
You may see passkeys mentioned alongside Sony’s 2SV instructions. A passkey is a separate sign-in experience, not another step in the 2SV activation flow described above. Sony explains passkey setup under Account Management > Security and lists support for PS5, PS4, the PlayStation website, PlayStation App, and Remote Play for Mac in its US passkey guide. Sony says most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later support passkeys, though device and browser behavior can vary. The reviewed guidance does not establish that every account configuration can use passkeys and 2SV simultaneously.
