No. You can follow the main story of an individual Uncharted game without playing the earlier entries. PlayStation says each game is a standalone adventure with its own narrative, even though the series has continuity. Playing in order adds context about recurring characters and relationships, but it is optional.
What you gain by playing in order
The games share characters and an evolving storyline, so earlier entries provide background that a later game may build on. That continuity enriches the experience; PlayStation does not describe it as a requirement for understanding each game’s central adventure.
PlayStation’s official FAQ for UNCHARTED: Legacy of Thieves Collection says: “While the series does have continuity, each game is meant to be a standalone adventure and can be enjoyed without playing any of the other games in the series.” It also says players can start with whichever title they prefer.

The first three Nathan Drake campaigns are included in UNCHARTED: The Nathan Drake Collection. Uncharted 4 continues Nathan’s story, while The Lost Legacy shifts focus to Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross. For the broader continuity-first route, play The Lost Legacy after Uncharted 4; it draws on characters and history from earlier games.
Where can you start if you only want one game?
Start with the game that interests you. For basic plot comprehension, prior entries are not necessary according to PlayStation’s guidance. You may miss some character background, but the available official sources do not quantify how much context is lost by skipping a particular game.
