Scientists usually do not date an ancient fossil itself. They work out where it sits in the sequence of rock layers, then use suitable materials in or near those layers—often volcanic ash—to establish numerical age limits. The result is an evidence-based age estimate whose strength depends on the geological context as well as the laboratory measurement.
Start with the fossil’s place in the rock layers
Most fossils are found in sedimentary rock, formed as layers of sediment accumulated and were buried. In a sequence that has not been disturbed, lower layers were deposited before higher ones. If a fossil is in a lower layer than another fossil, it is generally older in that sequence.
This is relative dating: it establishes order, not a precise number of years. The National Park Service explains that relative dating can determine the order of geological events but cannot establish how long ago they happened (NPS guide to geological dating).
Check whether the layers moved
Geologists cannot assume that the layers remain in their original position. They examine whether rock has been tilted, folded, faulted, eroded, or otherwise displaced. Those changes can alter the apparent order or remove part of the record, so field relationships matter before a layer sequence is used to interpret a fossil’s age. The Smithsonian’s overview describes how researchers use stratigraphy and geological context to assess fossil ages (Smithsonian Human Origins: Dating).

Use fossil types to correlate layers
Some fossils, called index fossils, are associated with a relatively narrow span of geological time. If the same recognizable index fossil occurs in separate rock sequences, it can help geologists correlate those sequences and assign them a relative age range. This does not directly produce an age in years; it depends on correct identification and on the fossil being in its original geological context. The Natural History Museum, London, explains the role of fossils in dating and correlating rocks (What is a fossil?).
Find nearby material that can be dated numerically
To estimate an age in years, researchers look for rocks or minerals associated with the fossil-bearing layer that record a datable geological event. Radiometric dating measures radioactive parent isotopes and the daughter products they form at known rates. The appropriate isotope system depends on the material and the time span being investigated; no single technique works for every fossil or rock.

Volcanic ash can bracket a fossil-bearing layer
Volcanic ash may contain minerals that crystallized during an eruption. If a dated ash layer lies below the fossil-bearing sediment and another lies above it, the fossil’s layer was deposited between the events recorded by those ash beds. The dates therefore bound the fossil’s age rather than directly measuring the fossil. Researchers may also use an igneous intrusion: if molten rock cut through a sedimentary layer, the intrusion is younger than the layer it cuts. The Smithsonian and National Park Service describe these kinds of geological constraints (Smithsonian Human Origins: Dating; NPS guide to geological dating).
Why sedimentary rock is harder to date directly
Sediment can contain mineral grains that formed long before they were eroded, transported, and deposited. A date on one of those grains may therefore record when the grain crystallized, not when the sediment—and its fossil—was laid down. That is why researchers often seek datable volcanic minerals or other geological events near the fossil layer instead of treating an ordinary sedimentary grain’s age as the age of the fossil-bearing rock. The U.S. Geological Survey discusses this distinction and radiometric dating methods in its guide to dating rocks (USGS: A beginner’s guide to dating (rocks)).

Why carbon-14 is not used for dinosaur-age fossils
Carbon-14 dating applies to relatively recent organic material, not to rocks directly and not to fossils that are millions of years old. Its half-life is about 5,730 years. NIST says the method has been used on bones, campfires, and other objects as old as 60,000 years, and in some cases older; that is not a claim that all fossil material can be dated to that age (NIST: How Do You Know the Age of Fossils and Other Old Things?). For ancient fossils, researchers generally infer age from associated rocks and stratigraphic position instead.
Understand what a reported age does—and does not—mean
A numerical date comes with uncertainty. The precision reported for a laboratory measurement is not the same as certainty that it dates the event of interest. Researchers also have to establish that the material actually records the geological event they are using to constrain the fossil.

For example, ash can be reworked after its original eruption. A mineral’s age in that ash may then reflect the eruption rather than the later deposition of the sediment where it was eventually found. Geologists assess such possibilities using the layer relationships and, where possible, compare results from multiple dating methods. A specific example illustrates why a date must stay tied to its context: the National Park Service reports that a 1-centimeter-thick ash bed in the uppermost Chuar Group yielded a direct date of 729 ± 0.9 million years. That is a measurement for that particular rock bed, not a general uncertainty or a fossil age (NPS guide to geological dating).

| Evidence or method | What it establishes | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Position in an undisturbed sedimentary sequence | Relative order: older or younger within the sequence | Does not give a numerical age; folding, faulting, erosion, or displacement can complicate the order. |
| Index fossils | Relative age range and correlation between rock sequences | Depends on identification and geological context; does not directly measure years. |
| Radiometric dating of volcanic minerals or ash | A numerical date for the event recorded by the minerals, which can constrain a nearby fossil layer | Its relevance depends on whether the dated material is in the right stratigraphic position and has not been reworked. |
| Igneous intrusion cutting sedimentary rock | A relative constraint: the intrusion is younger than the sediment it cuts | Constrains the sequence; it is not a direct date of the fossil. |
| Carbon-14 | A numerical age for suitable, relatively recent organic material | Not for rocks directly or fossils millions of years old; NIST gives a half-life of about 5,730 years. |
These lines of evidence answer different parts of the question. Layer order and index fossils place remains in a relative timeline; radiometric dates from suitable nearby materials can anchor that timeline to years. The fossil’s estimated age is strongest when its position and the dated geological evidence support the same interpretation.
