How to read these rankings
The story and gameplay lists assess the five main Nathan Drake and Chloe Frazer adventures as an editorial comparison. Story considers the premise and the role each game plays in character continuity. Gameplay considers the breadth of combat, traversal, exploration, puzzles, and set pieces, with an emphasis on how modern and varied the documented design is. These criteria do not amount to measured performance or a controlled comparison.
Accessibility is handled separately rather than assigned an unsupported winner. A useful comparison must be specific to a game, edition, and platform; available Naughty Dog accessibility documentation describes tools for some titles but does not establish that every tool appears throughout the series.
Story ranking
- Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Nathan has retired from treasure hunting when his brother Sam’s return pulls him back in. PlayStation calls it Nathan’s “most emotional journey yet,” framing the story around his past and difficult adversaries. That makes it a strong story-first pick, especially for readers drawn to a protagonist’s later-life reckoning. PlayStation’s Uncharted 4 page also says the game received over 150 Game of the Year awards; the page does not specify the award-year range, and that claim is not evidence that its story is objectively better.
- Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross pursue the Golden Tusk of Ganesh in India’s Western Ghats. Its different lead duo and focused adventure give it a distinct identity within the series, while Chloe’s history links it to earlier games. PlayStation describes the story and setting on its Lost Legacy page.
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Chloe first appeared in this second entry in the original trilogy. Its place in the ranking reflects its role in expanding the cast and the continuing character history, not an official assessment of its writing. The collection listing confirms its place in the trilogy: The Nathan Drake Collection.
- Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. The trilogy’s third campaign is most rewarding as part of Nathan’s earlier adventures rather than as a first stop for someone trying to follow the relationships chronologically. The official collection page identifies it as the trilogy’s final campaign.
- Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. The first Nathan Drake adventure establishes the starting point for the character continuity that follows. It ranks lower here only because the later games have more developed arcs to draw on; that is an editorial comparison, not a claim that the first game lacks a complete story.
Gameplay ranking
- Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. PlayStation highlights cinematic combat, exploration, traversal, and puzzles across the Legacy of Thieves games; its Uncharted 4 page also identifies the grapple hook as a traversal tool that supports dynamic set pieces. That breadth makes it the editorial pick for the strongest all-round modern package. This is a design-based judgment, not a playtest or performance ranking.
- Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. PlayStation describes it as combining cinematic combat, exploration, traversal, and complex puzzles. Those documented ingredients give it a varied gameplay profile alongside its different lead characters. The available official information does not establish that its mechanics are superior to Uncharted 4’s.
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Its position reflects the original trilogy’s place before the newer pair in this ranking’s emphasis on modern mechanics and breadth. The official trilogy collection page confirms the game’s inclusion but does not provide a title-by-title gameplay comparison.
- Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. The available official collection information confirms its campaign but does not support a detailed mechanical comparison with the other entries. Its placement is an editorial judgment within the trilogy, not a measured score.
- Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. As the original entry, it is the natural starting point for release-order continuity, but this ranking prioritizes the breadth and newer design features documented for the later games. The available official sources do not provide a comparable gameplay feature matrix for all five titles.
Accessibility: compare the actual edition, not the release date
There is not enough title-by-title official information to responsibly rank all five games from most to least accessible. Naughty Dog documents accessibility presets for vision, hearing, and motor access, which can be combined and adjusted individually, and describes Navigation Assistance and Enhanced Listen Mode for navigation and scanning. Those pages do not establish that these exact features are available in every Uncharted game or remaster. Consult the documentation and settings for the particular release before relying on a feature: Naughty Dog accessibility presets and Naughty Dog accessibility support.

For PC, the official Legacy of Thieves Collection PC page lists control remapping, keyboard and mouse support, supported gamepads, and graphical adjustment options. These are relevant benefits for PC players, but they do not answer every accessibility need or establish equivalent options on console.

- Navigation aids and options that reduce reliance on visual or audio cues.
- Subtitle, hearing, vision, difficulty, and language settings.
- Whether the setting is available in the game itself or only in a particular edition or platform version.
Do not assume that an accessibility feature documented for one Naughty Dog release carries over to another. If a required option is not confirmed for the exact game and platform, treat its availability as unknown until you can check that release’s settings or official documentation.
Which Uncharted game should you play first?
PlayStation’s Legacy of Thieves FAQ asks, “Which UNCHARTED game should I play first?” and answers, “Whichever one you’d like.” It says the games have continuity but are intended to work as standalone adventures. Naughty Dog has likewise said newcomers could start with Uncharted 4 or The Lost Legacy. Choose based on what matters most to you:

- For character continuity: play in release order: Drake’s Fortune, Among Thieves, Drake’s Deception, A Thief’s End, then The Lost Legacy.
- For a newer technical presentation: consider Legacy of Thieves Collection, which packages Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy for PS5 and PC. Starting there skips the original trilogy’s campaigns, but the official FAQ says each game is designed to work as a standalone adventure.
- For the original trilogy on PS4: The Nathan Drake Collection includes the single-player campaigns of the first three games.

The story and gameplay orders are useful starting points if you want a recommendation, but no official source establishes a universal ranking across all five adventures. For an accessible choice, prioritize confirmed features in the exact release you plan to play over a general position on a list. For a first playthrough focused on the characters, release order remains the clearest path; for a standalone entry, PlayStation’s guidance allows you to choose the adventure that appeals to you.
