Archaeologists do not identify sacrifice from a skull fracture alone. They assess whether an injury could have caused death, whether it occurred around the time of death rather than after burial, and whether the burial’s placement and treatment fit a ritual explanation. A 2026 reassessment of skulls from First Dynasty royal burial contexts at Umm el-Qa’ab near Abydos strengthens the case that some retainers were killed, but it does not establish that every person buried beside a royal tomb was sacrificed.
What the Abydos skulls show
Roselyn A. Campbell reassessed 46 skulls held in the Duckworth Collection at the University of Cambridge. The remains came from burials associated with the royal funerary contexts of King Djer, King Djet, and Merneith at Umm el-Qa’ab, near Abydos. As reported by Live Science on 5 October 2026 and by The Guardian on 5 October, updated 6 October, 18 of the 46 examined skulls showed signs described as potentially lethal trauma. Reported examples include linear fractures and one chopping injury to the eye.
Earlier excavator Flinders Petrie had interpreted some linear fractures as damage that occurred after burial. Campbell’s reassessment provides new support for the possibility that at least some retainers died violently. The reported findings concern potentially lethal trauma in the examined skulls; they are not a confirmed count of sacrifice victims.
How archaeologists assess a possible sacrifice
Identifying violence and identifying sacrifice are related but separate tasks. A skeletal injury may support the conclusion that a person experienced violence, but the claim that the death was ritualized requires evidence about the burial and its setting as well. The methodological review “The Archaeological Study of Sacrifice,” published in the Annual Review of Anthropology in 2017, describes evidence classes that researchers can consider together.

1. Assess the injury and its timing
Researchers ask whether the observed damage is consistent with an injury around the time of death, whether it could plausibly have been fatal, and whether post-burial damage offers a reasonable alternative. A fracture’s presence alone does not answer all three questions. The 2026 reporting identifies potentially lethal trauma in the sample but does not establish a detailed trauma classification for every skull.
2. Place the burial in space and time
Archaeologists examine how a burial relates spatially and chronologically to a royal tomb and to other burials in the complex. Association with a royal funerary setting can make a retainer-sacrifice interpretation relevant, but location by itself cannot show how an individual died or why.

3. Consider treatment, status, and life history
Burial treatment and evidence that a person served as a retainer can help assess whether an individual belongs to a proposed funerary practice. The methodological literature also identifies geographic origin, life history, health, preparation for sacrifice, and postmortem treatment as potentially relevant lines of inquiry. Such evidence is most useful when it converges with the skeletal findings and burial context, rather than being treated as a standalone proof.
4. Compare alternative explanations
Researchers must consider whether damage could have occurred after burial and whether retainers might have died naturally before being reburied. Earlier explanations for the Abydos burials included burial alive as well as natural death followed by reburial. Evidence of potentially lethal trauma bears on that debate, but it does not resolve the circumstances of every burial.

Why the sample cannot establish a total victim count
The 46 skulls are a small sample relative to the original burial population, and their representativeness is unknown. Campbell cautions that skulls without observed trauma cannot confidently be classified as sacrifices, and that the examined remains cannot show the full extent of the funerary practice. The result therefore supports a limited conclusion about the examined sample, not a rate that can safely be applied to all retainers or graves.
A 2017 review, “The Egyptian Predynastic and State Formation,” notes that roughly 2,000 people were interred around First Dynasty royal monuments at Abydos, Saqqara, Abu Rawash, and Giza, while emphasizing that the nature of their deaths is far from clear. That approximate burial population is not a confirmed number of sacrifice victims.

What can and cannot be concluded
- Supported: In Campbell’s reported 2026 reassessment, 18 of 46 examined skulls had signs of potentially lethal trauma.
- Reasonable interpretation: The findings strengthen the case that at least some retainers in these royal funerary contexts suffered violent deaths.
- Not established: The findings do not prove that all retainers were sacrificed, determine the full number of victims, or show that the sample represents the entire burial population.
The distinction matters: evidence for violence can strengthen a sacrifice hypothesis, but the interpretation depends on the combined skeletal, funerary, social, spatial, and chronological evidence for each case.
