To play Nintendo Switch Sports together on one console, connect the Switch to a TV, choose the game’s local-play option, select the player count offered for your sport or mode, then assign Joy-Con controllers using the on-screen prompts. You do not necessarily need a full pair of Joy-Con per player: the required arrangement varies by sport. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible, and the game does not support Handheld Mode. Nintendo’s product page describes same-system play; its Switch Sports FAQ covers supported play styles and compatibility.

What you need for same-console local multiplayer

  • A Nintendo Switch console and Nintendo Switch Sports. Nintendo lists the game for Switch, including Switch OLED and Switch 2 TV play. Nintendo’s product page describes playing with friends and family on the same system.
  • A TV setup: dock the console and connect it to the TV. Nintendo says the game does not support Handheld Mode.
  • Compatible Joy-Con controllers. The count and arrangement depend on the selected sport and mode, so wait for the game’s controller prompts rather than assuming each player needs a pair.
  • Enough clear space to move safely. Attach wrist straps when appropriate and follow Nintendo’s guidance to keep room around players and stay aware of your surroundings. Nintendo’s gameplay tips provide safety guidance.

Switch Pro Controllers and Switch 2 Pro Controllers are not compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports. Nintendo’s general limit of up to eight wireless controllers on a Switch in most circumstances is a console connection limit, not a promise that a particular sport or mode supports eight players. Nintendo’s controller-pairing FAQ explains the wireless-controller limit.

How to set up two or more players on one Switch

  1. Dock the Switch and display the game on a TV.
  2. Start Nintendo Switch Sports and choose the local-play option for playing on the same system.
  3. Choose the player count offered for the sport or mode you want. The game’s available choices can differ by activity.
  4. Follow the controller diagrams on screen. Assign each Joy-Con as prompted; depending on the activity, a player may use one Joy-Con or another supported arrangement.
  5. If the selected Soccer mode offers Leg-Strap controls, choose that option only if you want to use it. Otherwise, follow the controller arrangement shown for the mode.

Nintendo’s published material does not establish one button-by-button entry sequence that applies to every local mode. The reliable approach is to select local play and follow the game’s current prompts.

Why controller needs differ by sport

The game includes eight sports: Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, Chambara, Basketball, and Golf. The player options and controller layout are sport- and mode-specific; having enough controllers connected does not mean every activity accepts the same number of participants.

Nintendo Neon Purple/Neon Orange Joy-Con (L-R) - Switch
  • Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
  • Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
Sport or example What Nintendo describes
Soccer Shoot-Out Two people can play on one Switch, with five attempts for each player. A Joy-Con attached to the Leg Strap can be used to kick.
Bowling Players with a Joy-Con can roll at the same time rather than wait for turns.
Tennis A single Joy-Con is used like a racket; friends can play on the same system.
Volleyball, Badminton, and Chambara Nintendo describes Joy-Con motion-control play. The specific player and controller options depend on the selected mode.
Basketball and Golf Both appear on Nintendo’s current product page. The page does not establish one universal local player count or controller arrangement for these sports.

These are examples, not a universal controller chart. For the activity you choose, use the player count and controller instructions shown in the game.

When to use the Leg Strap

The Leg Strap is an optional Soccer accessory for supported modes, not a general requirement for local multiplayer. Nintendo describes using a Joy-Con with the strap to kick in Soccer. Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap. If you do not want to use the strap, follow the on-screen instructions for the other supported Soccer control option. Nintendo’s product page describes the accessory included with the game package; current standalone replacement availability is not established here.

Same-console play versus LAN play

For an ordinary living-room game, same-console local play is the simpler choice: one Switch, one shared screen, and no network setup. LAN play is a separate option for people using multiple consoles and a wired network.

Same-console local play LAN play
Consoles One Up to four
Network No LAN setup is required Each console connects by Ethernet to the same wired router; a network switch may be needed if there are not enough router ports.
Group size Depends on the sport and mode; choose from the player options the game offers. Up to two players per console and eight total across four consoles, subject to the sport’s simultaneous-player limit.
Game copies One console running the game The game is needed on each console.

Nintendo’s LAN play instructions are specifically for wired multi-console play. They do not make eight players a universal same-console limit.

Nintendo Blue/Neon Yellow Joy-Con (L-R) - Switch
  • Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy 2 player action in supported games
  • Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible

Set up a LAN room

  1. Connect the participating consoles by Ethernet to the same wired router. Set up each console with the game and, as applicable, its dock and TV.
  2. On the host console, highlight Play with Friends, hold L and R, then click and hold the Left Stick to open LAN Play.
  3. Select one or two players on that console, choose the users, and create a room.
  4. On each other console, use the same LAN Play path and join the host’s room.

The selected sport determines how many people can participate at once, even when the LAN setup supports up to eight people overall.
