Choose based on the games and library you already have
Pick PS5 Pro if PlayStation is already your home platform
Your existing PS5 and PS4 library, friends list, saves, and preferred PlayStation games are strong reasons to stay with PlayStation. PS5 Pro runs PS5 games and supports PS4 backward compatibility; Sony says Game Boost may improve or stabilize performance in supported titles, not every game.
For a new purchase, check whether the specific PS5 games you care about carry the PS5 Pro Enhanced label and what that label means in each title. Sony’s launch announcement includes examples, but it is not a live, complete catalog: PS5 Pro Enhanced games announced for launch.
Pick Xbox Series X if your Xbox library or compatibility needs lead
Microsoft lists thousands of backward-compatible games spanning four Xbox generations, though compatibility depends on the catalog rather than every game ever released. If you own Xbox games or regularly play with people on Xbox, that continuity can matter more than a modest difference in a particular game’s visual mode.

Check the catalog for the exact older games you want to keep playing before buying. A headline promise of backward compatibility is not a guarantee that every title from every generation is supported.
How much better will PS5 Pro games look or run?
Sony’s September 2024 announcement says PS5 Pro has 67% more compute units than the then-current PS5, 28% faster memory, and rendering up to 45% faster. These are Sony’s hardware and performance claims, not independent head-to-head benchmark results. Sony also promotes AI-driven PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling and advanced ray tracing.

Those specifications do not translate into one guaranteed frame rate or image-quality result across a game library. A title may offer a Pro-specific mode, improve resolution, target smoother performance, or show little visible difference; features vary by game. Xbox Series X likewise lists hardware-accelerated ray tracing, native 4K gaming, and up to 120 FPS as capabilities, not outcomes guaranteed in every title.
- Look up the games you actually play and their current PS5 Pro modes or enhancement details.
- Consider whether your display supports 4K and whether you value sharper image quality, higher frame rates, or visual effects most.
- Do not treat a console’s peak capability or manufacturer performance claim as a comparison of every game.
Compare the full setup price, not just the console
Sony’s current US recommended price for PS5 Pro is $899.99, effective April 2, 2026. Recommended prices differ by market, and Sony directs buyers in other locations to local stores or retailers. The official Xbox product page reviewed lists several models but does not provide a usable current price, so there is no sound same-market price verdict here. Check retailer prices on the same date and compare equivalent disc or digital setups.

If you buy physical games or want to play UHD Blu-ray movies, add the separately sold PS5 Pro disc drive to the PS5 Pro total. Xbox Series X configurations differ: the 1 TB Carbon Black and 2 TB Galaxy Black editions include a UHD Blu-ray drive, while the 1 TB all-digital edition does not. Confirm the exact model in any retailer listing.
Subscriptions can also affect value, but prices and game catalogs change. Compare current official PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass terms for your country, then check whether the included games are ones you would actually play. Do not assume either subscription is cheaper or offers better value without that market- and date-specific comparison.

Check storage and expansion before choosing
PS5 Pro comes with a 2 TB SSD; Xbox Series X is listed in 1 TB and 2 TB configurations. The larger capacity may reduce how often you need to uninstall games, but your real need depends on the size of your installed library and how many games you keep ready to play.
Microsoft lists a dedicated Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card that matches internal SSD performance. For either platform, check the exact expansion product’s compatibility and current availability before buying, and compare its cost with choosing a higher-capacity console in the first place.

Which console should you buy?
- Choose PS5 Pro if your library and preferred games are on PlayStation, you want its supported Pro modes, and the higher-resolution or smoother presentation matters on your display.
- Choose Xbox Series X if you own Xbox games, value its backward-compatible catalog, want a specific Xbox disc-drive configuration, or find its current local hardware and subscription offer a better fit.
- Pause and compare before buying if you mainly want the lowest total cost. Check current local console prices, account for a PS5 Pro disc drive if needed, and compare subscriptions using the same country and date.
