Yes. You can play Nintendo Switch Sports without internet by choosing local play on a single console. Play solo against computer opponents or share the console with other players; the number of players depends on the sport. Online modes require an internet connection, and online play also requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

How to play without an internet connection

  1. Start Nintendo Switch Sports on your console.
  2. Choose Play Locally in the US menu, or Play with Nearby People in Nintendo’s Japan menu wording. This is local play on one console, not wireless play between multiple consoles.
  3. Select a sport and set up the compatible Joy-Con controllers for the players. If you are playing alone, you compete against computer opponents.

Nintendo’s Japan support page lists all eight sports for local play without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Golf and Basketball require the free software update. Nintendo says one console supports one to four players depending on the sport. Nintendo Support Japan: choosing a mode to play without communication (accessed October 7, 2026).

Which modes need internet?

Mode Internet Nintendo Switch Online membership What to know
Play Locally / Play with Nearby People, on one console No No One to four players, depending on the sport; a solo player faces computer opponents.
Play Globally trial Yes No A single-player trial competition against computer opponents. Nintendo’s Japan support page specifies that internet is required.
Online play, including playing with friends Yes Yes Nintendo says an active membership is required to play online.
LAN Play across consoles Wired local network setup Not stated in Nintendo’s cited LAN instructions Up to four consoles and eight players total under Nintendo’s US instructions; the sport determines the player limit. This is distinct from wireless play between nearby consoles.

Nintendo’s online-play requirement is stated in its Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ. A membership-free trial does not mean offline play: the trial still needs internet.

Can nearby consoles connect wirelessly?

No. Nintendo Switch Sports does not support local wireless communication between nearby consoles. Its local mode is played on a single console. Nintendo documents LAN Play separately as a wired network setup; its US instructions specify up to four consoles, with up to two players per console and up to eight players total, depending on the sport. Controllers and equipment for local play

The game requires compatible Joy-Con controllers and does not support Handheld Mode. Controller configuration varies by sport. A solo player does not need an extra controller if they already have a compatible one; local multiplayer may require additional Joy-Con for the selected sport and player count. Nintendo lists the game in physical or download form for each console used in LAN Play.
