Sometimes—and it depends on the game and the feature. An AI character may use what you say to answer in the moment, save context for a later session, adapt a story to your choices, or contribute gameplay data to improvements to the game’s own systems. Those are different practices, and none automatically means a third-party AI provider trains its general-purpose model on your chats.
What does “learning from your gameplay” mean?
Games and AI providers can use “learning” to describe several different data flows. To understand a particular NPC, separate these questions:
- Live response: Does the system use your current message or other context to generate a reply?
- Memory: Does the game save conversation context or choices so the NPC can use them in a later session?
- Personalization: Does the game use earlier choices or behavior to shape future quests or scenarios?
- System improvement or training: Does the game operator analyze data to improve its own products or models, or does an AI provider use it to train a model?
A service may process information to provide a response without using it to train a model. Likewise, a game can personalize future play without sending data to a provider for general-model training. Look for a separate answer to each question in the game’s disclosures.
What do game policies say in practice?
These examples show why there is no single privacy rule for AI NPCs. Policies and settings can change, so check the current notice and privacy policy for the game you play.

Fortnite: voice AI characters
Epic says voice audio for Fortnite’s LLM characters is securely sent to Google’s Gemini to generate a response, is not stored, and is not used to train AI models. If a player reports a character interaction, Epic says a text log is sent to it to improve safeguards. Epic also says transcripts are otherwise not stored or used for training. Its guidance documents parental controls for allowing voice and written communication with AI features. See Epic’s parental-controls information and its Fortnite AI guidance.
Chapter: stored chat and progression
Chapter says it stores avatar and game-progression data as well as NPC messages, chat history, and attachments. It says NPC messages and attachments are sent to Anthropic for processing; limited profile or session context may also be used to personalize a response. Chapter’s policy says Anthropic does not use Chapter inputs or outputs to train foundation models under its Commercial Terms. That describes Chapter’s stated arrangements, not a rule for every game using an AI provider. Read Chapter’s privacy policy.

Trove: possible personalization across scenarios
Trove says it sends display name, pronouns, choices or responses, and conversation history from the current scenario to its AI providers. It may use patterns across scenarios to personalize future experiences, and says it may use de-identified behavioral data to improve its own models and personalization systems. These statements distinguish Trove’s own system improvement from provider model training; they do not establish that every provider trains on the data. See Trove’s privacy policy.
Roblox: cross-session memory affects its platform label
Roblox defines an extended AI interaction to include an AI component that saves prior interaction context and loads it in a later session. Under Roblox’s published platform guidance, a game with this kind of memory must answer “Yes” to the Extended AI question in its Content Maturity questionnaire and receive a Restricted maturity label, which is inaccessible to users under 18. The guidance also requires visible notices that the conversation is with AI; Roblox gives this example: “This is an AI-powered conversation, not human. It may make mistakes.” These are Roblox platform rules, not a universal age classification for AI NPCs. See Roblox’s content-maturity guidance.

Gameplay data can include more than conversations
Even if an NPC does not retain chat, a game may collect or analyze other information. Kongregate’s developer guidance lists gameplay events, performance metrics, behavior patterns, progression, and debugging data as possible inputs to AI improvement. It notes that whether this data is personal depends on how it is collected and used, and that developers remain responsible for applicable privacy obligations and disclosures. This is platform guidance, not evidence about any individual game’s practices. Read Kongregate’s developer guidance.
AI-related use can also involve contributed material rather than NPC dialogue. Niantic Spatial says volunteered routes, public-place images, or scans with location information may be used to improve products, including AI and machine-learning models, after scans are anonymized. Anonymization or de-identification should not be treated as proof that data carries no privacy risk. See Niantic Spatial’s privacy information.

How to check what a specific game does
Check both the notice shown when the AI feature is activated and the game’s current privacy policy. Search for terms such as “NPC,” “conversation,” “voice,” “gameplay data,” “personalization,” “memory,” “training,” “retention,” and the name of the AI provider.
- Identify the data. Look for chat text, audio, choices, progression, profile details, uploaded files, telemetry, or location-linked contributions.
- Separate purposes. Find out whether the data is used for a live response, saved for continuity, used to personalize later play, analyzed for safety or analytics, or used to improve or train a model.
- Check who receives it. The game operator, a cloud or AI provider, or both may handle the information. Processing by a provider does not by itself mean the provider trains on it.
- Look for retention and controls. Check whether data remains after a session and whether the game offers memory reset, deletion, export, or objection controls. If the policy does not state a retention period or explain a control, do not assume one exists.
- Review age and communication settings. Check whether AI chat or voice is limited by age labels or parental controls, and whether voice and written communication have separate controls.
Spain’s data-protection agency, the AEPD, recommends contextual notices explaining NPC data practices, detailed policies covering data flows and retention, limits tied to defined gameplay purposes, data minimization, and deletion of raw inputs where possible. It also recommends options such as memory reset and data export. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular game provides those controls. The agency’s guidance suggests a notice such as “This AI remembers your choices to personalise quests.” Read the AEPD’s guidance on AI and video games.

How to compare AI NPC privacy between games
When comparing two games, check the same dimensions in each policy or feature notice rather than relying on a general claim that the NPC “learns.”

- Which organizations can access it?
