Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, though some is reserved for system use. That may be enough if you keep a modest number of digital games installed; for a larger library, add a microSD Express card. A 512 GB card is a practical middle choice for many players, while 256 GB suits lighter libraries and 1 TB suits people who want to download and archive less often. These are capacity suggestions, not Nintendo requirements.

Compatibility is the key buying rule: Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards, not ordinary microSD cards used with the original Switch. Nintendo supports compliant microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance also says an internet system update is required the first time you use a microSD Express card.

Is 256 GB enough for Nintendo Switch 2?

It can be, depending on how many downloadable games and add-ons you want installed at once. Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage, but says that figure excludes space reserved for system use, so it should not be treated as 256 GB available for games. Game sizes vary, and updates or editions can change the space a title needs. Check the individual game’s official software page or packaging for its storage requirement; Nintendo says those sources list the required space for physical software as well (Nintendo physical software storage guidance).

For scale, a July 9, 2026 Tom’s Guide article reported 60 GB for Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, 90.5 GB for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and 3.8 GB for Blue Prince. Those are examples reported by that publication at that time, not a typical-game average or permanent specifications.

If you are comfortable removing or archiving games and downloading them again when you want to play, internal storage may be sufficient. If you prefer to keep more of your digital library installed simultaneously, add a card. A card expands room for downloadable software, updates, and DLC; it does not expand the place where game saves are stored.

Which microSD Express capacity should you buy?

Card capacity Best fit Documented examples
256 GB A modest digital library or a player willing to archive games and download them again as needed. SanDisk lists this capacity in its officially licensed Switch 2 range.
512 GB A practical middle choice if you want to keep more digital games installed without choosing the largest option. SanDisk lists this capacity; Lexar Play Pro is also reported in 512 GB.
1 TB A large digital library or less frequent downloading and archiving. SanDisk and Lexar Play Pro options are reported at this capacity.
Up to 2 TB For buyers considering the largest supported capacity. Nintendo supports compliant microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. The cited product information establishes 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB examples, not a specific 2 TB retail model.

SanDisk’s Switch 2 microSD Express data sheet lists 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB cards and estimates capacity at 9, 18, and 36 games respectively. Those are manufacturer estimates, not a promise: actual counts depend on each title and usable capacity.

Which specific microSD Express card should you buy?

Two documented options are the SanDisk microSD Express Card for Nintendo Switch 2 and the Lexar Play Pro microSD Express. SanDisk says its card is designed, tested, and approved for Switch 2, and offers 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB capacities. A July 9, 2026 Tom’s Guide article reports Lexar Play Pro capacities of 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB and describes the author’s hands-on use of the 512 GB model; that experience is not a controlled comparison or guarantee of performance.

TechRadar’s buying guide names SanDisk its best overall pick and PNY a budget option. That is an independent editorial ranking that may change with products and stock; it is not Nintendo certification. The available comparisons do not establish that every compatible card will make games load faster by a fixed amount.

Will an original Switch microSD card work?

Not for storing or loading Switch 2 digital games. Nintendo states that “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards” in its compatibility guidance. An ordinary microSD card that worked in the original Switch is not a substitute, even if it fits the slot.

A conventional microSD card previously used with an original Switch can still be used to import captured screenshots and videos to Switch 2 system memory. It cannot store or load Switch 2 digital games or save data. For game storage, buy a card explicitly identified as microSD Express.

What can you store on the card, and what happens to saves?

  • Downloadable games, updates, and DLC: Can be stored on a microSD Express card. When a card is inserted, it becomes the default save location for downloadable software.
  • Game save data: Remains in System Memory. Nintendo says it “cannot be copied or saved to a microSD Express card.”
  • Screenshots and captured video: Can be stored in internal memory or on the card, and moved between them.

These rules are described in Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ. A larger card therefore helps you keep more software and captures, but it is not a backup destination for game saves.

Should you use more than one card?

Nintendo recommends using one card. Software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card. If you outgrow your current card, copy its data to a larger microSD Express card instead; consult Nintendo’s FAQ for the supported transfer guidance. This avoids splitting your installed library across cards that cannot later be consolidated as stored software.

What to check before buying

  • Confirm the product is a microSD Express card, not a conventional microSD card.
  • Choose capacity according to how much software you want installed at the same time, rather than an assumed average game size.
  • Check the exact model, seller, warranty, and current regional price; price and availability are not fixed by the cited product information.
  • Plan for the required internet system update the first time the card is used.
  • Remember that saves remain in System Memory, regardless of the card’s capacity.
