Choose the disc-equipped PS5 if you want to play PS5 or PS4 game discs, use compatible movie discs, or keep the option of buying physical games. Choose the PS5 Digital Edition if you plan to download your games and do not need a built-in disc drive. Sony’s current US listings show 1TB of storage for the disc model and 825GB for the Digital Edition; check the model and prices available in your region before buying.
What’s different between the disc and digital PS5?
The disc-equipped PS5 has a built-in Blu-ray Disc drive and supports PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs as well as digital downloads. The PS5 Digital Edition has no built-in drive and is intended for downloaded games from PlayStation Store. These are the current US model descriptions on PlayStation’s PS5 product page.

Which edition fits how you play?
Choose the disc-equipped PS5 if you use physical games
If you own PS5 or PS4 game discs, or expect to buy them, the standard disc-equipped console is the straightforward choice. It also lets you choose between disc copies and digital purchases when both are available.

Choose the Digital Edition if you buy games online
If you purchase games through PlayStation Store and do not need physical media, the Digital Edition avoids paying for a built-in drive you do not expect to use. Game purchases and downloads depend on PlayStation Store availability and your internet connection.
Consider movie discs separately
The optional Sony Disc Drive is listed as supporting 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs. If movie playback matters, confirm the console model’s drive compatibility and any regional playback requirements before buying; the drive’s format support does not mean every Digital Edition can accept it.

Can you add a disc drive to a Digital Edition later?
Sony sells a separate Disc Drive for specified slim Digital Edition model groups and PS5 Pro. Sony’s support guidance identifies removable-drive compatibility with PS5 CFI-2000/7000 model groups. Check the exact model number and the listing for your region before purchasing; compatibility should not be assumed for every Digital Edition or console revision. Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console during setup. Buying the Digital Edition with plans to add a drive later therefore means a separate purchase and an additional setup step.

Compare total cost and storage before buying
Console prices vary by market, retailer, and availability. Sony’s buying page directs customers to retailers; the official material does not establish a stable price difference between the editions. Compare the current local price of each console and, if you may want discs, include the price of a compatible add-on drive in the Digital Edition’s total cost.
Sony’s US product page lists 1TB for the disc console and 825GB for the Digital Edition. Treat these as advertised capacities rather than promises about usable space. The difference alone does not establish how many games you can install, since game sizes vary.

Does one version perform better?
The reviewed Sony comparison establishes differences in disc support, listed storage, and drive availability; it does not establish that either edition runs games faster or delivers better game performance. Choose based on media needs, compatibility, storage listing, and the price of the specific models available to you—not an assumed performance advantage.

A quick decision checklist
- Pick the disc-equipped PS5 if you want to play PS5 or PS4 game discs without buying another accessory.
- Pick the Digital Edition if you expect to download games and do not need a built-in drive.
- If you may add a drive later, verify the exact CFI model group, regional listing, separate drive cost, and internet-pairing requirement first.
- Compare current local prices and advertised storage for the exact console revisions being sold.
