To limit a child’s PlayStation Store spending, set the child account’s Monthly Spending Limit through Family Management; PlayStation sets it to zero by default. To require a password for purchases on your own adult account, enable Require Password at Checkout. These are separate controls: the checkout password does not apply to child accounts or wallet funding.
Choose the control that matches the account

PlayStation recommends using separate child accounts so their Store access and spending can be managed through Family Management. See PlayStation’s safety guidance for parents.
Set a child account’s monthly spending limit
PlayStation says the child-account limit defaults to zero. Raise it only if the child is allowed to make purchases within a monthly amount you choose. Child-account purchases draw on the family manager’s wallet, not a wallet owned by the child. PlayStation’s parental-controls guidance explains the limit and console settings.
On the web
- Sign in to Account Management.
- Choose Family Management and select the child.
- Choose Edit beside Monthly Spending Limit and set the amount.
On PS5
- Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child, then open Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit.
- Set the monthly amount.
On PS4
- Open Settings > Parental Controls/Family Management > Family Management. Re-enter the account password if prompted.
- Select the child, then open Applications/Devices/Network Features > Monthly Spending Limit.
- Set the monthly amount.
In the PlayStation Family app
- Select the child from the app’s home screen.
- Scroll to Monthly Spending Limit and set the amount.
The app workflow is documented on PlayStation’s Canada Family app support page. That guidance says an appointed guardian can change spending limits, so consider carefully whom you appoint.

Require a password for purchases on an adult account
Require Password at Checkout asks for the account password whenever a purchase is made. PlayStation says the setting applies across devices used to access PlayStation Store, but it does not cover child accounts or wallet funding. Use the child’s monthly limit for child-account purchases. PlayStation’s checkout password instructions provide these routes:

On the web
- Sign in to Account Management.
- Select Payment Method.
- Turn on Require Password at Checkout.
On PS5
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Purchase Settings.
- Turn on Require Password at Checkout.
On PS4
- Open Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Wallet > Purchase Settings.
- Set Require Password for Purchases to Yes.
In the PlayStation App
- Select the PlayStation Store icon.
- Open the menu in the top-right corner and select Payment Methods.
- Turn on Require Password at Checkout.
Check the account and region before troubleshooting
- For a child, confirm you selected the child account in Family Management and set its monthly limit; an adult checkout password is not a substitute.
- For an adult, confirm the checkout-password setting is enabled on the account used to buy items. It will not prompt when funds are added to the wallet.
