That sequence helps narrow down whether the problem is power, the connection path, software, or the controller itself—without assuming every symptom has the same fix.
Start with power and isolate the problem
Before troubleshooting pairing or controls, check the controller’s batteries or other power source. Try a known-good power option that is compatible with your controller. Microsoft’s older Xbox One controller troubleshooting document specifically includes battery verification; its advice is useful for this basic check, but it should not be treated as current instructions for every Xbox controller model.
Next, note exactly when the fault occurs. Does it affect one button or several? Does the controller disconnect, or does it remain connected while sending unintended input? If possible, compare behavior in another game or on another device. A problem confined to one game or host does not by itself show that the controller is broken.
Why won’t my Xbox controller connect?
If the controller supports a wired connection, compare wired and wireless behavior. If it works reliably when wired but not wirelessly, that points toward the wireless connection path rather than proving a general input failure. If the same trouble occurs both ways, the issue may be broader. This comparison is diagnostic, not a guaranteed repair.

Pairing and connection steps vary by controller generation and host device. Use the current Xbox Support instructions for your specific controller and the console, PC, or other device you are connecting it to. Do not assume that one set of pairing steps applies to every Xbox One, Xbox Series, or Elite controller, or to every Windows and Bluetooth setup.
Why aren’t my Xbox controller buttons working?
Check whether the issue is limited to one button or affects multiple controls, then see whether it happens in more than one game or on another device. A single-game or single-host problem is different from a button that fails consistently across settings. Microsoft’s older Xbox One troubleshooting document recognizes unresponsive controls as a symptom, but it does not establish one universal cause or fix.

A reset, remapping, cleaning, or firmware change may sound like a quick answer, but the available official material does not verify a general procedure for every current model. Avoid opening the controller as a first-line step. If you are considering internal repair, use instructions made for the exact model; the repair guidance described below is for Elite Series 2 only.
How do I fix Xbox controller stick drift?
Stick drift is when a character, cursor, or camera moves even though you are not commanding that movement with the thumbstick. Microsoft’s older Xbox One troubleshooting document lists joystick drift and awkward calibration among unexpected controller behaviors. Neither symptom alone identifies the cause.

Keep a software or calibration check separate from a physical repair. The available sources do not verify a current, universal Xbox calibration tool or establish that recalibration reverses worn or damaged stick hardware. If drift persists across games or devices after you have checked the connection and power, consider service rather than assuming calibration will cure it.

Elite Series 2: an advanced, model-specific repair path
Microsoft Learn publishes component repair guidance for the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, including component disassembly and replacement. It includes safety cautions, including battery-related warnings. This is not a general repair guide for other Xbox controllers or a casual cleaning recipe; follow it only if you have the exact model and are prepared to observe its safety requirements.

Choose the next step based on the evidence
- Keep troubleshooting: the problem appears limited to one game, one host, or one connection method and has not been reproduced elsewhere.
- Check service eligibility: the fault persists across games or devices after model-appropriate checks, especially before spending money on a replacement.
- Consider a model-specific repair: you have an Elite Series 2, can follow Microsoft’s component instructions safely, and have checked service options first.
- Consider replacement: repair or service is unavailable or unsuitable, and the exact replacement model is compatible with your console or host.
