Aspect ratio, pixel dimensions, and file format are separate decisions: getting each right helps avoid awkward crops, undersized prints, and unnecessarily large files.
Choose the aspect ratio for the destination
Aspect ratio is the relationship between an image’s width and height, such as 1:1 or 16:9. It determines the image’s shape, not its pixel count. Start with the target canvas or placement so the result needs as little cropping or padding as possible.
- 1:1 (square): A common choice for square posts, profile imagery, or a square design slot.
- 16:9 (landscape): A common shape for widescreen video or TV layouts.
- 9:16 (portrait): A common shape for vertical mobile content.
These are examples, not universal platform specifications. Check the requirements of the service or design where you plan to use the image. Midjourney notes that aspect ratio is not the same as image dimensions, and that final dimensions can depend on the version and upscaler. See its aspect-ratio guide.
Set pixel dimensions for the screen or print size
Pixel dimensions are the image’s actual width and height in pixels. A square image can be small or large; the ratio alone does not tell you whether it has enough pixels for a particular display or print.

For screens
Compare the image’s pixel dimensions with the display area where it will appear. A larger file does not automatically look better: the result also depends on the display size, the layout, and how the image is scaled. Avoid generating far beyond the delivery requirement unless you need room to crop, edit, or reuse the image at a larger size.
For print
Work backward from the intended physical dimensions and print density. As a simple calculation, multiply the desired print width and height in inches by the target pixels per inch (PPI) to estimate the pixel dimensions needed. For example, a 10-by-8-inch print at 300 PPI would call for 3000×2400 pixels. This is a calculation, not a guarantee of print quality; the result also depends on the image, printer, and print service.

Midjourney describes around 300 DPI as usually required for best-quality printing, but that is its general guidance, not a rule for every printer or service. DPI metadata and actual pixel dimensions are distinct: a DPI value in a file does not create additional pixels. Its image size and resolution guide also distinguishes screen use from print.
Check your generator’s current size options
Available aspect ratios, dimensions, and output sizes vary by provider, model, and version. Some tools let you request an aspect ratio or size category rather than arbitrary dimensions; an API’s requested dimensions may also differ from its final output. Check the documentation for the specific model you are using, including any upscaling behavior.

OpenAI API
OpenAI’s image-generation guide recommends 1024×1024 for square images, 1536×1024 for landscape, and 1024×1536 for portrait. For the documented GPT Image models, it also describes custom dimensions subject to constraints: width and height must be multiples of 16, the aspect ratio must be between 1:3 and 3:1, the longest edge can be up to 3840 pixels, and total pixel count must be between 655,360 and 8,294,400. OpenAI labels resolutions above 2560×1440 as experimental. These are provider- and model-specific limits, so verify them in the current OpenAI image-generation guide before relying on them.
Midjourney
Midjourney says final pixel dimensions depend on the version and upscaler. Its documentation accessed in 2026 gives version 8.2 square examples of 2048×2048 for HD and 1024×1024 for SD. Treat those as version-specific examples, not dimensions that apply to every version or aspect ratio. See Midjourney’s size and resolution documentation.

Gemini API
Google’s Gemini API documentation shows that labeled resolution options can produce different pixel dimensions from one provider to another. In its documented model table, a 16:9 image at 1K is 1376×768, while 16:9 at 2K is 2752×1536. Check the model-specific table in the Gemini API image-generation guide for the options available to your model.

- PNG: A sensible choice when you need transparency or want the generator’s default format. OpenAI documents PNG as its default output.
- JPEG: Useful when a compressed image is more convenient and transparency is not needed. OpenAI says JPEG is faster than PNG when latency matters.
- WebP: An alternative that can support transparency in OpenAI’s documented models; check whether your editor, site, or delivery service accepts it.
For OpenAI’s documented models, transparent backgrounds require PNG or WebP; JPEG does not provide that option. The OpenAI API also documents compression settings for JPEG and WebP. These details apply to the documented API models and may not describe another generator’s behavior. Consult the OpenAI guide for current format options.
Balance quality, speed, and cost
For quick drafts, OpenAI suggests using a lower quality setting; for a final image, compare higher settings against the detail you need, latency, and cost. Higher quality or resolution is not automatically worthwhile if the output will be displayed small. Very high resolutions are described as experimental in OpenAI’s guide, so avoid assuming they will be the best choice for every workflow.
