If Nintendo Switch Sports cannot find a match or keeps disconnecting, first check whether Nintendo’s servers are under maintenance, confirm that the Switch user playing has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and note any error code. Then open System Settings > Internet > Test Connection and record the NAT type and connection speeds. A working internet test alone does not guarantee peer-to-peer matchmaking will work.

1. Check Nintendo’s servers, membership, and any online restriction

Error code 2124-4610

Nintendo says error code 2124-4610 in Nintendo Switch Sports means the online servers are undergoing maintenance. Check Nintendo’s network status page and try again when service is available. Changing router settings is unlikely to help while the game’s servers are under maintenance.

Confirm the playing user has online access

Nintendo Switch Sports online play requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership on the user playing the game. If you have just activated a membership, Nintendo advises closing the game and trying again after a short time. Without membership, Play Globally offers a trial competition against computer opponents. See the Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ.

Repeated unexpected disconnections

If the game says, “Your online play has repeatedly ended unexpectedly so you can’t play for now,” Nintendo explains that repeated disconnections can trigger a temporary restriction on online play. Wait for the restriction to pass, and avoid leaving or disconnecting from online matches before they end. Nintendo’s guidance is in its article on unexpected disconnections during online play.

2. Test the connection and interpret the results

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Internet > Test Connection.
  2. Write down the NAT type, download speed, and upload speed shown in the results.
  3. After each troubleshooting change below, run the test again so you can see whether the result changed.

Nintendo grades NAT from A, best for peer-to-peer communication, through F, which cannot complete peer-to-peer communication. Nintendo prefers NAT A; NAT B is compatible with most other NAT types. NAT C may have difficulty connecting to some restrictive peers, NAT D is not optimal for peer-to-peer connections, and NAT F indicates communication is blocked. Even NAT A or B cannot rule out matchmaking trouble: high latency can still lead to timeouts. Consult Nintendo’s NAT troubleshooting guidance.

Nintendo’s matchmaking troubleshooting flow uses 3 Mbps download as a decision point. This is a diagnostic threshold in Nintendo’s guide, not a guarantee that every match will work at or above that speed. If your result is below 3 Mbps, follow Nintendo’s connection-speed troubleshooting guidance; if it is at least 3 Mbps, continue with the network and connection-type checks below. Latency and the overall network environment still matter.

3. If you use Wi-Fi, improve the wireless connection

  1. Move the console within 3 to 5 metres (10 to 15 feet) of the router while troubleshooting.
  2. Move objects or electronics near the console or router that could interfere with the wireless signal.
  3. Power cycle your home network, then retest the console connection.
  4. Try disabling IPv6 on the console, then test again.
  5. If the problem remains, ask your router manufacturer about a firmware update or factory reset. If a test connected directly to the modem still fails, contact your internet service provider.

Retest after each change rather than applying several at once; that makes it easier to identify which step affected the connection. Nintendo’s matchmaking troubleshooting guide and NAT guidance cover these network checks.

4. If you use a wired connection, isolate the cable and network

  1. Turn off IPv6 on the console and run the connection test again.
  2. Power cycle the network equipment.
  3. Connect the console directly to the modem, if possible, to check whether other devices or router settings are involved.
  4. Try a different Ethernet cable if the connection still fails.

A Nintendo Switch dock without a built-in LAN port needs a USB LAN adapter to make a wired connection. Nintendo’s matchmaking troubleshooting guide includes the wired-connection checks.

5. Diagnose error code 2618-0513 and peer-specific failures

Nintendo says error code 2618-0513 usually means the network is not optimal for peer-to-peer matchmaking. Possible factors include the internet service provider, connection speed, or NAT type. Retry once, check your NAT result, and try another network if one is available. Nintendo notes that mobile hotspots or 5G networks may prevent peer-to-peer connections. If switching networks resolves the issue, contact your ISP about the original connection; router firmware or a reset may be relevant if the router is the cause. See Nintendo’s guidance for error code 2618-0513.

If you can play with some opponents but not one particular player, ask that player to run the same connection test. Nintendo states that both players’ NAT types can affect whether they connect, so a problem limited to one opponent may not be caused by your console alone. Its NAT support article explains how peer compatibility affects connection attempts.

6. Work out whether the issue is your console, network, or Nintendo

  • Maintenance code or broad service outage: Check Nintendo’s network status and retry after service is available.
  • Membership missing or recently activated: Confirm the membership for the user who launched the game; after activation, close the game and retry after a short time.
  • Low speed, restrictive NAT, or trouble across multiple opponents: Follow the appropriate Wi-Fi or wired checks and retest after each change.
  • Failure with only one opponent: Have both players compare connection-test results, especially NAT types.
  • Connection works on another network but not yours: Contact your ISP or investigate the router, depending on which part of the network the tests implicate.
