Start by trying weapons in the Training Area, then use the Progress Guide and NPC speech bubbles to find your next quest. In Monster Hunter Rise, Wirebugs support both movement and weapon-specific combat, while Village and Hub quests follow separate tracks. You do not need to choose a permanent weapon or follow a universal upgrade schedule: learn what feels comfortable, check the target’s information, and adjust your gear to the hunt.
Which weapon should you start with in Monster Hunter Rise?
There are 14 weapon types, each with its own traits and play style, according to Nintendo’s beginner guide. No single weapon is the right choice for every beginner. Start with the kind of action that sounds appealing, try it in the Training Area, and change weapons from the village Item Box if it does not feel right.

These are starting examples, not a ranking. Weapon speed, reach, and combos differ, so test several options against training targets before taking an unfamiliar weapon into an aggressive hunt. Nintendo recommends using the Training Area to try weapons and get familiar with the Wirebug. Exact inputs depend on platform and weapon; use the button prompts in the game and the weapon-specific entries in Hunter’s Notes rather than assuming a control combination from another platform.
How do Wirebugs work?
The Wirebug Gauge is an on-screen resource used for two different kinds of action. What your Wirebug does depends on whether your weapon is sheathed or drawn:

- Weapon sheathed: Wirebug actions perform a Wiredash for movement and consume gauge.
- Weapon drawn: Wirebug input activates a weapon-specific Silkbind combat function.
Gauge regeneration, gauge consumption, and available Silkbind actions vary by weapon. There is no single move or timing that applies to all weapon types. In the Training Area, practice both Wiredash movement and your chosen weapon’s Silkbind action, and watch the on-screen prompts for the controls that apply to your platform.
What should you do first?
- Choose a quest counter. Speak with Hinoa at the Village Quests Counter for single-player Village quests, or Minoto at the Hub Quests Counter for Hub quests. Village quests are single-player only; Hub quests are available for single-player or multiplayer.
- Follow the game’s progress cues. Check the on-screen Progress Guide to track Village and Gathering Hub progress. Pay attention to NPC speech bubbles: red bubbles especially can signal important progression information.
- Read the quest card before departing. Check its objective and failure conditions. Do not assume every quest asks you to hunt a monster.
- Try your weapon and Wirebug actions. Use the Training Area before you take a weapon into a difficult hunt. If the handling does not suit you, change equipment in the village rather than forcing yourself to stick with it.

Look up the target before setting out. Hunter’s Notes can include its locations, rewards, weaknesses, and habits, giving you useful information for choosing equipment and approaching the encounter.

Pack useful supplies
Potions and Well-done Steak are reliable essentials. Check the camp Supply Box as well; a quest may provide temporary supplies there. You can gather resources to craft consumables or buy them from certain villagers with in-game currency.
Adjust your loadout if something feels wrong
If your weapon or armor is uncomfortable for the task, change it from the Item Box. Use what you learn about the target and your own experience in the hunt to decide what to try next.

How do armor and upgrades work early on?
Armor consists of five pieces, with defense, elemental resistance, and other stats. Choose pieces with your play style and objective in mind; for example, fire resistance may be useful against a fire-breathing monster. Hunts provide rewards used to create and upgrade weapons and armor, as well as to select skills.
At the Smithy, weapons and armor can be forged or upgraded using money and specified materials. Armor can also be improved with Armor Spheres and money; that improvement does not change its appearance. The useful early-game approach is to look at the hunt in front of you and the problem you want to address—not to chase an unverified “best” set or a fixed upgrade schedule.
