If the agent must make changes, give it a narrowly scoped account, restrict which sites and tools it can use, and require separate human approval for consequential edits. A website allowlist controls where the agent can go; it does not, by itself, authorize changes.
Find every route the agent could use to make a change
Website edits may happen through more than a browser. Check whether the agent has a connected content-management system, website API, MCP integration, terminal command, or browser/computer-use capability. If editing is not part of the task, disable the write-capable tool and remove its credentials. Leaving an unused administrator session connected defeats a read-only setup.
If the agent needs to edit, map the exact write path and limit the permissions on that path rather than relying on a general instruction such as “don’t make changes.” Give the agent a separate account or token with only the smallest site role and scope it needs. Avoid sharing a high-privilege account with general-purpose computer-use tasks.
Restrict which websites and tools it can access
Where the product supports it, set access to block by default and allow only the required site origins. Treat browser access, uploads, downloads, and advanced browser or debugging capabilities as separate permissions if the product exposes them separately. Keep administrator-enforced rules in place: OpenAI’s enterprise browser and computer-use guidance says a member’s approval cannot override an administrator restriction. Restricting access is not the same as approving an action. An agent allowed to visit a site should not automatically be allowed to publish, overwrite, or delete content there. Keep those consequential actions behind a distinct confirmation step.
Require approval for consequential changes
Require a person to review and confirm changes that could publish or overwrite content, delete data, spend money, change account access, or otherwise have a significant effect. Keep terms acceptance and financial transactions behind affirmative human consent. Approval should apply to the specific action, not serve as blanket permission for later activity.

Product defaults vary, so check the exact product and version rather than assuming an agent will ask before writing:
- Cursor: Cursor’s security documentation says agents can modify workspace files without approval except for configuration files, and changes save immediately. It also warns that auto-reload can execute changes before review. Terminal commands require approval by default, while MCP tool calls require individual approval unless pre-approved. Its run-mode guardrails are described as best-effort, not a hard security boundary. See Cursor Agent Security.
- Google Antigravity: Its settings describe Default, Request Review, and Turbo presets. Turbo grants full read/write access without isolation; allow, deny, and ask rules take precedence over presets. The updated permission system applies to macOS and Linux, while Windows uses prior settings, so verify the platform and version. See Google Antigravity Agent settings.
- OpenAI Enterprise: Administrators can configure site access and controls for uploads, downloads, and debug/CDP capabilities, set approval behavior, and restrict Computer Use to selected applications. Availability of site tools is distinct from browser access itself. See the workspace controls documentation.
Isolate computer-use agents
A computer-use agent can interact with whatever the environment exposes, so reduce the possible impact of a mistake or malicious page. Run it in a dedicated virtual machine or container with minimal privileges, restrict outbound network access to required domains, and avoid sensitive accounts and data. AWS specifically warns that content an agent sees can lead to unintended actions and recommends isolation and human oversight for consequential or consent-requiring actions. Do not treat page content as trusted instructions. A page may contain hostile or misleading material; isolation and network restrictions limit what the agent can affect even if it behaves unexpectedly.
Make the controls enforceable and auditable
A confirmation prompt is only one safeguard. For managed or higher-risk use, also limit the approved tool and version set, separate the agent’s role from the person approving its work, and prevent the agent from changing its own privileges or making unapproved delegations. The New Zealand National Cyber Security Centre recommends approved tool/version allowlists, policy checks, risk-based approvals, and human-readable logs. Keep records of tool calls and outcomes in a form a person can review. Logs help establish what the agent attempted and whether a control blocked it; they do not replace access restrictions or approval requirements.

- Use a staging site or test account. Do not validate write restrictions on valuable live content.
- Check a read action. Confirm the agent can complete the intended read-only task.
- Attempt an unapproved write. Verify it is blocked or paused for human review, rather than silently saved or published.
- Test administrator denial. Confirm a user-level approval cannot override an administrator restriction where the product provides that control.
- Review the logs. Check that the attempted action and its result are recorded clearly.
- Repeat after changes. Recheck the write path after changing agent versions, tools, credentials, or permission settings.
There is no single permission switch that covers every agent and deployment. Website rules, approval gates, credential scope, isolation, and logging are separate controls; verify the combination in the product and environment you actually use.
