Local unlocking and remote app control are separate: during an outage, you may still be able to unlock at the door while losing remote unlocking, status updates, notifications, or settings changes.
Start with the kind of outage you need to handle
“Works without internet” can mean several different things. A lock might continue accepting a code at the door but stop responding to remote commands. It might also retain Bluetooth control from a nearby phone while losing cloud-based features. Decide which functions you need during an outage before comparing models.
- Local entry: Can you unlock at the door using a keypad, physical key, or Bluetooth?
- Remote access: Can you unlock or check the lock from elsewhere? This commonly depends on Wi-Fi, internet access, a bridge, or a hub.
- Account and settings: Can you change codes, invite users, or adjust settings during the outage, or must those actions wait for a connection?
A lock’s ability to unlock locally does not establish that its remote features will work. Google says the Nest × Yale keypad works without Wi-Fi, while app control and settings changes do not. Choose a local entry method that fits your routine
Keypad
A keypad lets you enter a code without a phone at the door. Confirm that existing codes are stored and accepted locally, and check whether creating or changing codes requires an internet connection. Those details vary by model; a keypad alone does not guarantee that all code management works offline.

Mechanical key
A physical key is an independent way to operate the lock if the network or the lock’s electronics are unavailable. It is useful only if the particular model has a key cylinder and you keep the key accessible. For example, Nest × Yale has a keypad but no physical key.
Bluetooth from a nearby phone
Local Bluetooth can provide app control when the phone is close to the lock, even if Wi-Fi or internet access is down. It depends on having a compatible, charged phone nearby, so it is not a substitute for a keypad or key if you may arrive without one. Compare documented examples without treating them as a ranking
These manufacturer descriptions illustrate why the exact offline function matters. They are not an independent test or a complete market comparison.

Check what the outage disables beyond unlocking
Before buying, check the manufacturer’s documentation for each function you care about. Remote unlocking, live status, notifications, sending new access, and changing settings may depend on internet access or a bridge even when entry at the door remains available. Ask whether the lock stores existing codes locally, whether new or changed credentials can be added offline, and what happens to app control when the connection returns.

For instance, Yale says a Wi-Fi Bridge is needed for remote connectivity, while Google distinguishes the Nest × Yale’s working keypad from unavailable app control and settings changes during Wi-Fi loss. Do not assume a bridge or hub is included, compatible with your setup, or unnecessary simply because a lock has Bluetooth. Yale support · Google Nest Help · Level Lock
Plan separately for dead batteries
Internet loss does not drain a battery, and a working network does not help if the lock has no power. Check the exact model’s battery type, low-battery warnings, and emergency-entry instructions. A physical key can provide a mechanical fallback on models that include one; an emergency charging port is another model-specific option.

Aqara lists four AA batteries and a USB-C emergency charging port for the B50. Aqara’s U100 FAQ gives an average battery life of 8 months, measured by the manufacturer with LR6 AA batteries under simulated use of 8 openings and 8 auto-lockings per day at 25°C. Offline access is only useful if the lock fits your door and can be installed with the system you have. Check the current regional product page and manual for the supported door preparation and lock format, regional availability, and any required hub, bridge, or security system. - Choose your preferred local entry method: keypad, key, Bluetooth, or a combination.
- Confirm that the method works without internet on the exact model and find out whether existing codes remain usable.
- Identify which remote functions require Wi-Fi, internet, a bridge, a hub, or another system component.
- Check the battery and emergency-entry procedure in the model’s manual.
- Verify door fit, regional compatibility, and any required ecosystem equipment before purchase.
