Buy only if what you learned—and what remains uncertain—still makes the full game worth its price to you.
What a demo can—and cannot—tell you
Steam describes demos as free opportunities to try a game before buying. Their size and scope vary; a demo is generally a small playable portion intended to show some of the core mechanics. That makes it a sample, not a miniature version of every part of the finished game. Valve’s Steamworks documentation explains the purpose and possible scope of demos.
Valve advises developers to make demos high quality and representative of the real experience, while balancing enough content to interest players against giving away so much that they feel they have already experienced everything. This is developer guidance, not a promise that a particular demo represents the full game. Treat the actual content you played as evidence only about that content.
How to evaluate the demo
- Decide what matters to you first. Name the features or qualities that would make the purchase worthwhile: the gameplay loop, challenge level, story tone, controls, multiplayer mode, accessibility options, or typical session length. If the demo does not include something important, mark it as unknown rather than assuming it will work for you.
- Play the core loop, not just the opening. Notice the basic actions and decisions you repeat. Do you enjoy doing them enough to continue? A polished tutorial or opening sequence is evidence about the portion you played, not necessarily about later systems or chapters.
- Check for friction on your setup. Pay attention to controls, interface clarity, camera behavior, readability, and performance. Ask whether these suit your PC and preferences in the demo’s actual scenes. This is a practical checklist, not an official Steam score or a guarantee about how other parts of the game will run.
- Separate evidence from unknowns. Make a short list of what you tried and what the demo does not show—such as other modes, progression systems, later story content, or endgame. Do not treat missing content as proof that it is good or bad.
- Check the full game before deciding. Compare its published PC system requirements with your computer, especially if the demo contains only a small or less demanding portion. A demo cannot establish performance in content it does not include. Steam lists not meeting hardware requirements among the reasons someone may request a refund; that is not a substitute for checking compatibility in advance. See Steam’s refund policy.
- Judge the price against your confidence. Ask whether what you enjoyed, plus the uncertainties you are willing to accept, justifies the full price. If a must-have feature was absent from the demo, look for reliable information about that feature before treating it as a reason to buy.
Will demo progress carry over?
On Steam, a developer can configure a demo to share cloud storage with the full game, allowing a player to continue a demo save after buying. This setup is optional, so do not assume progress will transfer. Check the game’s demo or store information for an explicit save-continuity note. Valve describes this option in its Steamworks demo documentation.

If you buy on Steam, know the refund conditions
Steam’s general policy says a game refund is available when requested within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Steam Support says online, offline, and shared-library playtime all count toward the playtime limit. These are Steam rules, not rules for every PC storefront, and local consumer rights may differ. Review the current Steam Refunds policy and Steam Support’s common refund questions before relying on a refund as a fallback.
