To stop Instagram alerts about new features or selected activity without losing direct-message notifications, open Profile > menu > Settings and privacy > Notifications and turn off the relevant category or sub-option. To silence Instagram on a schedule, use Sleep mode; to block its push alerts more broadly, use your phone’s notification settings.
Turn off selected Instagram notifications
- Open Instagram, tap your profile icon, then tap the menu icon.
- Choose Settings and privacy, then Notifications. If the labels differ, look for “Notifications” in the app’s settings.
- Open the category that best matches the alert and switch off the relevant toggle or sub-option. Leave other categories enabled if you want to keep receiving those alerts.
Depending on your app version, categories may include Posts, Stories, and Comments, Following and Followers, Direct Messages, Live and Reels, and From Instagram. Instagram’s menu and category labels can change, and there is not necessarily a universal “new features” switch. If you cannot identify the alert, check the related category or search the settings area for “Notifications.” See EverydayTech’s Instagram notification guide for category examples.
Block Instagram alerts in Android settings
Use Android’s app notification controls if you want to block Instagram alerts more broadly or adjust the notification categories your phone exposes.
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Choose Instagram.
- Turn off its notifications, or adjust the available categories individually.
You can also press and hold an Instagram notification and open its settings. The exact path and category options vary by Android device and version; Google notes that some steps differ on older versions. See Google’s Android notification instructions.

Schedule a quiet period with Sleep mode
For a recurring or temporary break, Instagram’s Sleep mode is the scheduled option Meta documents. Meta updated its instructions and naming on January 28, 2025; the feature was previously called Quiet mode.
- Open your profile and tap the menu icon.
- Go to Setting and Activity > Time Management > Sleep mode.
- Switch Sleep mode on, choose the days and hours, then save.
Sleep mode does more than mute alerts: Meta says it changes your activity status, automatically replies to DMs, and provides a notification summary after the mode ends. Check for a feature-specific notification setting
Some alerts may be tied to a particular feature rather than a general notification category. Tom’s Guide reported on May 24, 2026, that some users could find Hide Instants in Inbox under Content Preferences. The report says the setting hides the Instants stack and its associated notifications. It may not appear for every account or app version. See Tom’s Guide’s report on the Instants setting.
