Nintendo specifically says controlled motion can curve a bowling ball or add spin to a tennis shot, but it does not publish a technical explanation of the tracking system or a numerical accuracy rating. To improve results, use the technique Nintendo recommends for the sport you are playing, then check calibration and connection settings if the controls behave inconsistently.
How the motion controls work
You move a Joy-Con, and the game uses that motion as an input for an action in the selected sport. The motion can influence more than a basic swing: Nintendo says controlled movements can curve a bowling ball and add spin to a tennis shot. In Soccer, a Joy-Con can also be used with the included Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball.
Nintendo does not describe the internal tracking algorithm, specify exact wrist angles or movement thresholds, or provide a quantified accuracy figure. So treat the examples above as documented game behavior—not as a universal instruction to flick, twist, or swing the controller in one particular way for every sport.
Improve your technique by sport
Tennis: time contact for a faster serve
For a faster serve, Nintendo’s Play Nintendo tips page says to hit the ball when it is at its highest point in the air. It also recommends starting your swing a little early so the racket has time to meet the ball, and notes that practice is needed. This is a serve-specific timing cue, not a rule that every tennis shot uses the same timing.

Golf: account for wind and shot height
Check the wind meter before you swing: Nintendo says wind can move a shot away from its intended path. Higher shots are more affected, and Nintendo names wedges and irons as examples of clubs that tend to hit high. Use the wind information to adjust your intended shot rather than assuming every club or trajectory will be affected equally.
Bowling and other sports: follow the sport’s own cues
Nintendo confirms that controlled motion can curve a bowling ball and add spin to a tennis shot, but its cited game information does not give exact movement instructions for producing those effects. Nintendo publishes tips across the sports it lists, so consult the relevant sport-specific guidance rather than relying on a single swing or wrist-rotation technique for all of them.

Play safely and make room to move
Before practicing, wear the Joy-Con wrist straps and leave adequate space around you, as Nintendo advises. Keep other people and objects clear of your movement area so you can make controlled motions without striking anything.
Calibrate a Joy-Con when motion feels off
Calibration is a system-level check, not a sport-specific aiming adjustment. Nintendo’s procedure is to update the console, open the motion-calibration setting, remove controller attachments, and let the controller rest in the prescribed position while the calibration completes.

- Update the Nintendo Switch system software.
- Open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Motion Controls.
- Remove straps or other attachments from the Joy-Con.
- When prompted, press the controller’s minus or plus button as directed.
- Place the Joy-Con on a flat, stable surface with the control stick facing upward, then wait for calibration to finish.
Troubleshoot unreliable motion input
If calibration does not resolve the problem, use Nintendo’s broader checks. First confirm the game supports the motion feature you are trying to use. Then update the system and controller, reset the detached Joy-Con, and calibrate motion controls. If the controller remains unresponsive in supported software after those checks, Nintendo says it may need service.
Check sport-specific controller setup
Controller arrangements vary by sport. For Soccer, Nintendo’s FAQ says Leg-Strap Mode is selected from the sport-selection screen in global play, or from the controller setup screen in local play and play with friends. The Leg Strap is described by Nintendo as included with the game.

Consider wireless interference
Nintendo says recurring Joy-Con connection-instability messages may point to wireless interference. One clue in its FAQ is that characters may not move correctly when the controller is shaken. If the issue persists after system and controller checks, consult Nintendo Support for the relevant connection troubleshooting or service options.

Nintendo documents motion-driven effects and gives a few sport-specific technique tips, but does not publish a motion-control accuracy percentage or controller-performance benchmark for Nintendo Switch Sports.
