Protecting a smart home takes two layers of work: secure the accounts and apps that control each device, then secure the router and Wi-Fi network those devices use. Start by inventorying what is connected, change default or reused passwords, enable multifactor authentication where available, install updates, and check the router’s security settings. A guest or smart-home network can help, but its isolation depends on the router’s configuration.

1. Make an inventory of devices and accounts

Start with the router’s connected-device or client list. The label and location vary by router, so consult its documentation if you cannot find the list. Identify devices you recognize, such as cameras, speakers, plugs, thermostats, TVs, and hubs, and match each one to the app and account used to manage it.

This inventory helps you find devices that are still connected but no longer in regular use, as well as accounts whose passwords or security settings need attention. If an unfamiliar device appears, check whether it belongs to someone in your household before changing network access.

2. Secure each smart-home account

Replace default and reused passwords

For each device account, change any default password and any password reused on another account. Use a distinct password for every account. Secure the router’s administrator login separately from both your smart-home accounts and your Wi-Fi password.

Enable multifactor authentication

Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) for each smart-home account that offers it. MFA requires another verification method in addition to a password or PIN, which can help protect an account if that credential is exposed. Availability and setup differ by manufacturer and service; check the account’s security settings or the manufacturer’s instructions.

Review privacy settings and access

Review each app’s security and privacy settings, including who can access the account or control devices. Remove access that is no longer needed, and check the manufacturer’s guidance for device-specific options. The exact controls differ by product, so there is no single setting path that applies to every smart home.

3. Keep device and router software current

Install available software or firmware updates for both smart-home devices and the router. Where automatic updates are offered, consider enabling them. Check the device manufacturer’s or internet service provider’s update guidance for the supported process.

Support periods vary by device. If a product no longer receives security updates, consider retiring or replacing it: an unpatched device can remain a weak point even when its account and Wi-Fi password are strong.

4. Secure Wi-Fi and router administration

Use WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal

In the router’s Wi-Fi security settings, choose WPA3 Personal when available; otherwise use WPA2 Personal. The FTC describes WPA3 as the newer and best available option and says both WPA3 and WPA2 scramble information. Avoid WEP and WPA, which the FTC identifies as outdated and insecure. See the FTC’s How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network guidance.

Use a unique Wi-Fi password rather than reusing an account password. If the router cannot offer WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal, check for a software update before considering replacement.

Change the router administrator password

Change the router’s default administrator credentials to a unique password. This is different from the password people use to join Wi-Fi: the administrator login controls router settings, while the Wi-Fi password grants network access. The FTC’s Securing Your Internet-Connected Devices at Home guidance emphasizes the router’s role in protecting connected devices: “The key to privacy in the Internet-of-Things (IoT) world is your router.”

Review optional router features

The FTC recommends turning off remote management, WPS, and UPnP because these convenience features can weaken security. Their usefulness depends on your household: remote management can allow administration from outside the home, WPS can simplify connecting devices, and UPnP can help devices or apps make network connections. Before disabling a feature, consider whether something you rely on needs it, then follow the router’s documentation to change the setting and check that essential devices still work.

Check that the router firewall is enabled, following the router or ISP instructions. Router menus and feature behavior vary, so do not assume a setting has the same name or effect across models.

5. Consider a guest or smart-home network

If your router supports it, you can place visitors’ devices or smart-home devices on a guest or separate network. This can reduce how directly those devices share the main network, but creating a separate network does not guarantee isolation on every router. The actual separation depends on the router’s configuration and features.

Check the router documentation to understand what the guest-network option isolates and whether devices on it can still communicate with one another or reach devices on the main network. Choose a setup your household can maintain; some smart-home products need to communicate with a phone, hub, or other device, and a network change may affect those connections.

6. Decide whether existing equipment needs replacement

Do not replace a working router before checking its update options and security modes. Install available updates, then verify whether it supports WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal. If it still cannot provide either mode, replacement is worth considering.

When comparing replacement routers, check these practical criteria rather than relying on a product ranking:

  • Support for WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal.
  • The manufacturer’s or ISP’s software-update support.
  • Guest-network or other network-segmentation controls.
  • Compatibility with your internet service and the devices already in your home.
  • Administrative controls for passwords, updates, firewall, and optional features.

NIST’s September 10, 2024 NISTIR 8425A addresses cybersecurity outcomes and requirements for consumer-grade routers. For broader context, a NIST study published July 23, 2020 interviewed 40 smart-home users; it found that concerns did not always lead to mitigation, often because device options or users’ technical knowledge limited what they could do. That sample count describes the study, not all smart-home users.
