For browser-based Markdown editing with a documented Google Drive import-and-save workflow, Dillinger is the clearest fit. If you prefer a desktop app, Typora can work with Drive through a synchronized local folder. Google Docs is a third option: it can open and edit Markdown files stored in Drive, but some formatting may change or be removed. These are three different workflows, not three versions of built-in Drive integration.
Which Markdown editor should you use with Google Drive?
| Option | How it works with Drive | Best fit | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dillinger | Its integrations page describes importing Markdown files from and saving them to Google Drive. | Browser-based editing with an explicit Drive connection. | Confirm the current integration and export details on Dillinger’s product pages; these are vendor descriptions, not independent test results. |
| Typora | Typora edits plain-text Markdown files; a third-party sync tool such as Google Drive can synchronize the folder that contains them. | Desktop writing in a cloud-synced local folder. | This is file synchronization, not a documented built-in Drive editor connection. Avoid simultaneous conflicting edits to the same file. |
| Google Docs | Google says a Markdown file in Drive can be previewed and opened for editing in Docs while retaining its .md file type. | Drive-based sharing, comments, collaboration, and viewing the rendered result. | Some formatting and Docs features do not carry through unchanged in Markdown files. |
For a browser editor that directly connects to Drive, start with Dillinger. Dillinger’s Features page says it can “Import and save files directly to GitHub, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or Bitbucket.” Its feature page also describes live preview and Markdown, HTML, and PDF exports. These are the vendor’s stated capabilities, so check its current pages for details before relying on a particular integration or export.
Use Dillinger for browser editing and direct Drive access
Dillinger is the most straightforward choice when you want to open a browser editor, work on Markdown, and use an explicitly described Google Drive import-and-save workflow. Its vendor pages also list live preview and several export formats, which can be useful if you need to review rendered Markdown or produce a different file format.
The documented feature is importing and saving files to Drive. The cited product information does not establish details such as account requirements, privacy handling, or conflict resolution, so check those directly if they matter to your workflow.

Use Typora when you want a desktop editor and synced folder
Typora is a desktop Markdown editor. Typora’s support guidance describes Markdown files as plain text that can be synchronized with third-party tools, including Google Drive. In practice, you edit a local file in Typora while a sync client synchronizes its containing folder.
That differs from connecting an editor directly to Drive: the sync client handles file transfer, and Typora handles editing. If two devices edit the same file before synchronization finishes, conflicting versions can result. Typora’s support page identifies it as desktop-focused and says no near-term mobile version was planned as of that page’s update; check the current support information if platform availability is important.

Use Google Docs when Drive collaboration matters most
Google’s instructions say you can upload a Markdown file to Drive, preview it there, then open it in Docs for editing. Google says the file remains an .md file rather than being converted into a Google Docs file. Google Docs Editors Help describes Docs as “an editor where you can see the final format and work with others.”
Google documents formatting limitations for Markdown files. Smart chips can become text or links, HTML web formatting can turn into plain text, and font colors, highlights, and text alignment are removed. If your Markdown file relies on any of those features, check the result after editing.

Choose by workflow, not by the phrase “Google Drive support”
- Want to edit in a browser and explicitly import from or save to Drive? Dillinger’s vendor pages describe that workflow.
- Want a desktop Markdown app and already keep files in a synchronized folder? Typora can edit plain-text files synchronized by a third-party tool such as Google Drive.
- Want Drive sharing and Docs collaboration? Google Docs can edit a Markdown file while retaining its .md type, with the formatting caveats above.
- Need a specific export? Dillinger lists Markdown, HTML, and PDF exports; verify current options on its product page.
- Need to preserve particular formatting? Check Google’s documented Markdown limitations before editing in Docs.
