The Intel Optane SSD DC P4800X is a discontinued, enterprise-oriented PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe drive whose case rests on low latency and high endurance—not headline sequential speed. Historical tests show why it can excel in some low-queue-depth and latency-sensitive workloads, but results vary with workload and test setup. The exact P4800X variant matters too: the line includes U.2 and PCIe add-in-card models, not the M.2 format associated with the separate P4801X.

What the P4800X is—and which version you are looking at

The P4800X is an enterprise Optane SSD designed for workloads where responsive random access, mixed I/O, and write endurance can matter more than maximum sequential throughput. Intel’s product pages currently mark the 375GB and 750GB U.2 specifications as discontinued. The family also includes a 375GB HHHL PCIe add-in card. Intel’s portfolio lists M.2 models under the distinct P4801X name, so do not assume an M.2 listing is a P4800X.

Before comparing a listing or planning installation, identify its exact SKU and physical format. The official U.2 specification pages are Intel’s 375GB P4800X specifications and Intel’s 750GB P4800X specifications. Intel’s Optane product portfolio distinguishes the wider family’s formats; family-level details should not be mistaken for specifications of every P4800X SKU.

Intel’s published specifications

The table compares the two U.2 capacities for which Intel’s current product pages provide these figures. Sequential and random performance figures are Intel maximum specifications, not guarantees of performance in a particular PC or server.

U.2 variant Interface and format Sequential read/write, up to 4K random read/write, up to Endurance rating Intel page status
375GB PCIe 3.0 x4, NVMe; U.2, 15mm 2,400 / 2,000 MB/s 550,000 / 500,000 IOPS 20.5 PBW at 30 DWPD; 41 PBW at 60 DWPD Discontinued
750GB PCIe 3.0 x4, NVMe; U.2, 15mm 2,500 / 2,200 MB/s 550,000 / 550,000 IOPS 41 PBW at 30 DWPD; 82 PBW at 60 DWPD Discontinued

PBW means petabytes written; DWPD means drive writes per day over the rated period. The figures describe product ratings, not a prediction of how much life remains in a used drive. Intel also lists 18W active power, 5W idle for the 375GB U.2 and 6W idle for the 750GB U.2, an operating range of 0–70°C, a 2-million-hour MTBF, UBER of one sector per 1017 bits read, and a five-year warranty. Those are original product specifications; they do not establish warranty coverage for a discontinued or second-hand unit.

What reviews and benchmarks show

Low-queue-depth latency is central to the review story

AnandTech’s 2017 review reported Intel’s typical-latency specification as below 10 μs and measured 8–9 μs for most QD1 random reads in its own tests. It also examined tail latency, where the P4800X could differ from NAND competitors. These are historical results from AnandTech’s test platform and comparison drives, not a guarantee for a current system. The useful takeaway is that average throughput alone can hide behavior relevant to latency-sensitive work.

Peak IOPS depend on the test method

StorageReview reported a 4K peak random result of 585,754 IOPS at 213 μs in a particular test. Its method filled the drive surface and then tested a partition sized at 25% of drive capacity. That result should not be compared directly with a lab’s steady-state, full-drive measurement unless the workload and drive preparation are aligned.

Vendor comparisons are setup-specific

Intel’s 2018 performance index claimed up to 6× faster low-queue-depth 4K 70/30 read/write IOPS and up to 60× better 99% QoS for the 375GB P4800X versus the 1.6TB Intel DC P4600. The comparison used a specified Intel 2U server running CentOS 7.5. It is a historical vendor result for that setup, not an independent or current head-to-head comparison with today’s SSDs.

For a benchmark to be interpretable, it should identify the comparison drive, host, firmware, operating system and driver, workload, queue depth, block size, read/write mix, drive preconditioning, and latency percentile. A result without those details may say little about how the drive will behave in a different workload.

Why the host can change the result

Optane’s low latency can make parts of the I/O path visible that matter less with a slower device. Intel’s June 2020 Windows evaluation guide says: “With the reduction in latencies, Intel Optane SSD performance becomes sensitive to some of the variables that NAND SSDs are indifferent to.” The guide discusses CPU speed, PCIe bus topology, PCH/DMI routing, request alignment, software behavior, and multi-socket paths as potential influences on measured latency.

In practical terms, two systems with the same drive can produce different results if one connects it directly to CPU PCIe lanes and another routes I/O through a chipset, or if their CPU frequency, operating system, firmware, or software stack differs. Who may benefit—and who may not

Potential fit

  • Systems with random, mixed, or write-intensive workloads where low latency or rated endurance is a material requirement.
  • Low-queue-depth applications where responsiveness and latency consistency matter more than peak sequential transfer rates.
  • Enterprise or lab environments able to validate the exact device, host path, cooling, and workload before deployment.

Weak fit

  • Buyers seeking a current, high-capacity consumer SSD or a plug-and-play M.2 upgrade.
  • Workloads judged only by sequential throughput: the published figures do not make the P4800X a universal speed leader.
  • Buyers who cannot verify a used drive’s identity, health, history, platform compatibility, or return terms.

The P4800X’s advantage is workload-specific. It should be compared with NAND NVMe drives or later Optane products using the same queue depth, latency percentile, workload mix, and drive state—not with a single peak number.

How to check compatibility before installing one

For a U.2 model

A U.2 drive needs a suitable U.2 data connection and power path. An adapter is not automatically compatible just because both ends use NVMe signaling. Confirm that the motherboard or host supports the connection and cable arrangement, that the necessary PCIe lanes and power are available, and that firmware and the operating system can see the device. Check whether the slot is CPU-attached or chipset-routed, and provide suitable cooling.

For the HHHL add-in-card model

Check card clearance, the slot’s physical and electrical lane support, airflow, and system firmware support. Do not apply U.2 cabling assumptions to the add-in-card version.

For a used or refurbished unit

  1. Match the part number and capacity. Verify whether the listing is a P4800X U.2 drive or the HHHL card, and do not confuse it with a P4801X M.2 model.
  2. Inspect health and wear data. Ask for the drive’s SMART or equivalent NVMe health information and write history; compare the reported condition with the relevant endurance rating.
  3. Confirm firmware and platform behavior. Establish that the system can detect the drive and that it is not locked or otherwise unsuitable for your platform.
  4. Review seller protection. Check return terms and independently verify any claim about remaining warranty. Intel’s discontinued status does not establish that a particular used drive remains covered.

Current stock, market pricing, listing credibility, and remaining warranty are not established by Intel’s product specifications or the historical reviews. Treat them as transaction-specific facts to verify with the seller and the exact unit.

Verdict

The Intel Optane SSD DC P4800X remains an interesting specialist drive, not a general-purpose recommendation. Its published endurance ratings and historical low-latency results explain why it was designed for demanding enterprise workloads; its discontinued status, PCIe 3.0 interface, capacity, and format make exact-model and host checks essential today. Consider one only when the workload can use its latency or endurance characteristics and you can validate the individual unit and system configuration.
