Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a free transfer without an account, TransferNow is a straightforward option for files up to 5 GB; SwissTransfer is worth considering when you need more capacity, with a 50 GB free limit listed in a 2026 comparison. If you send finished files from Dropbox, Dropbox Transfer can deliver a download link without requiring recipients to have Dropbox accounts. The right choice depends on file size, access expiry, account requirements, and whether you need recipients to send files back.
Which WeTransfer alternative should you choose?
Choose a temporary-transfer service when the job is to deliver files and let recipients download them. Choose cloud storage when people need to keep working from shared files, manage ongoing access, or collaborate in the same workspace. A download link and a shared working folder solve different problems.
- For a no-account send up to 5 GB: TransferNow lists that capacity on its free tier, along with password protection and file reception. TransferNow’s alternatives page describes its plans and features.
- For a larger free transfer: SwissTransfer is listed at up to 50 GB free in Jotform’s 2026 comparison. Confirm the current limit and terms with the provider before relying on it.
- For very large files: Jotform’s 2026 comparison describes Smash as offering unlimited-size transfers on its free tier, with uploads above a threshold queued; it lists paid transfers up to 250 GB. Check Smash’s current limits and queue conditions before sending.
- For sending files already in Dropbox: Dropbox Transfer is designed for finished files, and recipients can download through a link without a Dropbox account.
- For ongoing collaboration: Consider Google Drive or OneDrive if you already work in those productivity ecosystems. They are cloud storage and sharing tools, rather than direct substitutes for a temporary transfer link.
How the main alternatives compare
| Service | Best fit | Capacity and access details | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| TransferNow | One-off sending and receiving, including free no-account use | Up to 5 GB per transfer on the free, no-account tier; password protection and file reception are listed by TransferNow. | Larger transfers and extended professional controls require an account. Verify current plan terms on TransferNow. |
| SwissTransfer | A large free transfer | Jotform’s 2026 comparison lists up to 50 GB free and 30-day retention. | These figures come from a comparison publisher, not a provider page here. TransferNow says SwissTransfer does not include file reception. Confirm current terms with Infomaniak. |
| Smash | Very large transfers where a queue is acceptable | Jotform’s 2026 comparison lists unlimited-size free transfers, with uploads above its threshold queued, and paid transfers up to 250 GB. | Queueing and retention affect convenience. Confirm the current details with Smash. |
| Dropbox Transfer | Sending completed files stored in Dropbox | Transfer size depends on plan. Dropbox Basic, Family, and Plus transfers expire after seven days; certain other plans allow a custom expiry date and default to 30 days if one is not selected. | It is part of Dropbox storage, and its size and controls vary by plan. Recipients do not need a Dropbox account to download from a shareable link. See Dropbox Transfer help. |
| Google Drive or OneDrive | Sharing files as part of a continuing productivity workflow | Jotform identifies them as alternatives suited to their respective productivity ecosystems; no comparable transfer cap or expiry figure is stated here. | They are persistent cloud storage and sharing tools, not necessarily the most direct temporary-transfer workflow. See Jotform’s comparison. |
What to check before choosing
File size and free-tier conditions
Do not compare headline gigabyte limits in isolation. A free transfer may come with shorter retention, a queue, or different account requirements. SwissTransfer’s 50 GB and Smash’s unlimited-size free offer are figures reported by Jotform in 2026; TransferNow’s page lists a 5 GB free, no-account tier. Check the provider’s live terms before a time-sensitive send.
Expiry and recipient access
Decide how long the recipient needs the files. Dropbox Transfer illustrates how expiry can vary by plan: Basic, Family, and Plus transfers expire after seven days, while certain other plans offer a custom date and default to 30 days when none is selected. For other services in this comparison, the exact current expiry controls should be checked on the provider’s plan or help page.

Accounts, passwords, and receiving files
Check whether the sender needs an account, whether recipients can download without one, and whether the service supports passwords or incoming uploads. TransferNow lists password protection and file reception on its free plan. TransferNow’s comparison says SwissTransfer does not offer a file-reception tool, so it may not fit a workflow where recipients must upload files to you.
Delivery versus shared storage
Use a transfer service when you want to hand off a finished file. Use a cloud storage service when the recipient needs ongoing access to shared material or collaboration. Dropbox describes Transfer specifically as a way to send files that do not need collaboration; the recipient downloads from a shareable link rather than joining a Dropbox workspace.

Security: what providers say, and what that does not prove
WeTransfer says files are encrypted in transit and at rest, that people with the transfer link can open them, and that content is not used to train AI. These are WeTransfer’s statements about its service; they do not establish end-to-end encryption. Treat a shareable link as access that should be sent only to its intended recipients, and use a password option where available and appropriate.
TransferNow says it offers encryption and antivirus scanning, and describes an SSE-C option on some account plans. Those are provider claims and plan-specific details, not evidence that every option uses the same controls. For sensitive files, review the service’s current security documentation and the controls available on the plan you intend to use.

Practical recommendation
Start with the workflow, not a universal ranking: use TransferNow for a simple free send up to its listed 5 GB no-account limit or when file reception and password protection matter; investigate SwissTransfer for a larger free send; consider Smash when very large size matters and queued delivery is acceptable; use Dropbox Transfer for finished files already in Dropbox; and use Drive or OneDrive when the recipient needs continuing shared access. Verify current limits, retention, and controls with the provider before sending important files.
