The Synology DiskStation DS916+ is a discontinued four-bay NAS that can still serve as a network-storage device, but any used purchase should be judged first by its fixed memory configuration and limited software-support runway. What the DS916+ is—and what comes in the enclosure
Introduced in 2016, the DS916+ is a four-bay network-attached storage enclosure aimed at professionals and growing businesses. Its four bays accept 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA III/II drives, but drives are not included. That means the drive cost and compatibility check belong in the purchase decision, not as an afterthought. Synology’s DS916+ datasheet gives the specifications and its stated capacity calculation.

The 56 TB figure is the datasheet’s calculation, not a guarantee that every later or third-party drive combination will be supported. Confirm a particular drive’s compatibility with Synology before buying.
Performance: distinguish launch claims from independent testing
In its 2016 launch materials, Synology reported read speeds above 225 MB/s and write speeds of 221 MB/s. For encrypted data transfers, it reported 225 MB/s read and 209 MB/s write. These are vendor figures, not results from a current independent test, and should not be treated as a forecast for a used unit, a different drive configuration, or a particular workload. Memory is fixed, so choose the right configuration
Synology offered the DS916+ in 2 GB and 8 GB configurations. IT Pro reported that the memory cannot be upgraded, making the installed configuration a lasting constraint rather than a simple future upgrade. When buying used, confirm whether the unit is the 2 GB or 8 GB version and decide whether that fixed amount suits the services and workload you intend to run.

Software support: DSM 7.4 is the listed endpoint
Synology classifies the DS916+ as discontinued. Its status page lists full DSM updates but limited technical support. Synology’s DSM release notes identify DSM 7.4 as the last upgradable version for this model; the page lists DSM 7.4.1-90080 dated July 23, 2026. These are time-sensitive details, so check the product status page and DSM release notes before deployment. A listed last-upgradable version is not a promise of future feature releases or a statement that every security issue will receive a fix.
Expansion and capacity planning
Synology named the DX513 as the DS916+ expansion unit and described a path from four to as many as nine drives. Current availability for this legacy accessory is not established, so do not base a purchase on assuming it can be obtained. If expansion is important, verify the exact accessory and its availability before committing to the enclosure.

Is a used DS916+ worth buying?
There is no universal yes or no: the answer depends on the unit’s condition, its fixed memory, the cost of compatible drives, and whether its software-support position fits your use. The available information does not establish a current used-market price or a controlled comparison against newer NAS models, so it cannot support a claim that the DS916+ is a bargain or a better performer than a current alternative.
- Confirm the exact memory configuration and that it is adequate for your intended workload.
- Inspect the enclosure and bays for damage, and confirm the seller can demonstrate that the unit starts and recognizes drives.
- Check each proposed HDD model against Synology’s compatibility information; allow for drive costs because the enclosure is sold without drives.
- Review Synology’s current status and DSM release pages, especially if the NAS will hold important or remotely accessible data.
- Compare alternatives on support runway, total cost with drives, bay count and expansion options, and independent tests relevant to your workload.
The DS916+ can make sense when its capabilities and condition meet a specific need at an acceptable total cost. Its age, discontinued status, fixed memory, and DSM 7.4 ceiling are central trade-offs—not details to overlook in favor of its original performance claims.
