To get backlinks, publish a useful resource that another site would genuinely want to cite, then contact a small number of relevant publishers with a clear, specific reason it helps their readers. The aim is an independent editorial reference—not a link made to manipulate search rankings. Google classifies links created primarily for that purpose as link spam.
What makes a backlink worth pursuing?
A backlink is a link from another website to a page on yours. Google says it uses links to help determine page relevance and discover pages to crawl. That does not mean every backlink is useful or that acquiring one guarantees higher rankings. Focus on whether the link would make sense to the people reading the page that links to you.
Before approaching a publisher, assess the opportunity on its merits:
- Topical fit: Does the referring page cover a subject related to your resource?
- Reader value: Would the reference help that page’s audience learn, verify something, or complete a task?
- Editorial independence: Can the publisher decide whether and how to cite you, without a demanded anchor or ranking-credit condition?
- Page context: Is the link placed in relevant content on a legitimate page, rather than in a pile of unrelated links?
- Policy risk: Is the link being earned for its usefulness, rather than bought or manufactured to influence rankings?
Third-party SEO tools can help find pages and inspect backlinks, but their proprietary authority scores are estimates, not Google’s disclosed measure of link quality. Ahrefs notes that no one outside the search engines can say exactly how engines measure backlink quality in its guide to high-quality backlinks.

How to earn backlinks, step by step
1. Choose a page with a clear purpose
Select a page that serves a specific audience and answers a real question. It might be a guide, reference, tool, calculator, or research page. A page that is vague, thin, or difficult to use gives an editor little reason to cite it.
2. Give publishers a concrete reason to reference it
Improve the page with something that adds value beyond what relevant coverage already offers: original evidence, a useful visual, a practical tool, a well-organized reference, or a concise explanation of a missing point. These are ways to make a resource more cite-worthy, not guarantees that it will attract links or improve rankings. Ahrefs discusses linkable resources in its beginner’s guide to link building.

3. Find relevant pages and the people responsible for them
Search for publishers that have covered the subject or serve the same audience. Look at the actual page, not just a domain-level score: identify a specific place where your resource could help readers. SEO platforms can assist with backlink research and prospecting, but a metric alone cannot establish that a prospect is relevant, trustworthy, or likely to link.
4. Send a short, tailored request
Contact the relevant editor or author with a brief explanation of why you chose their page, what your resource contributes, and where it might fit. Make the request easy to assess and leave the decision to them. Ahrefs’ link outreach guide describes outreach as contacting websites to request a backlink and advises against excessive follow-up.

A simple message can follow this structure:
- Point to the specific article or resource you read.
- Explain in one sentence how your page could help that page’s readers.
- Share the resource link and let the editor decide whether it belongs.
A generic mass email does not explain why a particular audience needs your page. Repeated follow-ups after silence can turn a relevant introduction into unwanted pressure.
5. Let the publisher control the citation
Do not demand an exact-match anchor, a reciprocal link, or an unqualified paid placement. Google lists excessive link exchanges and certain paid placements that pass ranking credit among its examples of link spam. The key question is whether a link is being created primarily to manipulate rankings, not whether a particular tactic can be made to look like editorial outreach. See Google’s spam policies.

6. Track outcomes without claiming causation
Keep a record of prospects, messages, replies, placements, and whether links remain live. Review campaigns for relevance, editorial fit, effort, and policy risk. A placement is an outcome to track—not proof by itself that the campaign caused a ranking change.

Google defines link spam as creating links to or from a site primarily to manipulate search rankings. Its examples include buying or selling links for ranking purposes, excessive exchanges, automated link creation, and paid editorial placements whose links pass ranking credit. Avoid campaigns built around manufacturing ranking signals rather than helping readers.

If money or another form of consideration is involved, the link should be qualified appropriately. Google’s link guidance says paid links may use rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow"; links in user-generated content may use rel="ugc" or rel="nofollow". A natural link should also use descriptive, relevant anchor text. For a link to be crawlable, Google recommends an anchor element with an href. Details are in Google’s link best practices.
What to do if Google reports a link-related manual action
If Search Console shows a manual action, read the report and follow its instructions rather than disavowing links indiscriminately. Google advises making a good-faith effort to remove problematic links before using the disavow tool in a reconsideration context, and warns against blindly adding all backlinks to a disavow file. Start with the Search Console manual actions report and the relevant policy.
What backlink results can you reasonably expect?
There is no universal backlink count, response rate, campaign timeline, or ranking return established for this process. Results depend on the resource, audience, publisher, and editorial decision; do not treat any promised number of links or ranking gains as guaranteed. Measure the work you can observe—relevance of prospects, effort, replies, placements, and link status—and avoid attributing ranking changes to a campaign without supporting evidence.
