Memory shortages could affect the next Xbox’s price and availability, but they have not been shown to delay Project Helix—and there is no confirmed PS6 delay. Microsoft says Project Helix is in development, with alpha hardware planned for developers beginning in 2027, but it has not announced a retail launch date. Industry forecasts point to tight memory supply into 2028; that is a market outlook, not a console schedule or a promise that shortages will end that year.
When will Xbox Project Helix launch?
Microsoft has confirmed that Project Helix is its next-generation first-party Xbox console. It is being developed with a custom AMD SoC and is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Microsoft says it plans to provide alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027. That milestone is for development hardware, not a consumer release. Xbox’s GDC announcement does not give a retail launch date.
In an April 2026 interview, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said memory costs would affect Project Helix pricing and availability, and that the company was not ready to share a launch timeline. Her comments show that component costs are part of Xbox’s planning, but do not establish that the console has been delayed. Windows Central’s report on Sharma’s interview quotes her saying, “All of these things are an equation. Memory costs will impact pricing, will impact availability.”
What does “shortage until 2028” actually mean?
It describes forecasts for the memory market, not a confirmed end date for a shortage and not a fixed date for either console. TrendForce’s July 30, 2026 outlook estimated the DRAM sufficiency ratio at approximately -1% to -2% in 2026, a market-level estimate rather than a measure of console allocations. It forecast tight DRAM supply and a wider supply-demand gap in 2027, with substantial output from new capacity not expected until 2028. TrendForce’s 2027 memory outlook attributes pressure to high-bandwidth memory capacity allocation, AI server demand and rising memory content in servers.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Micron’s outlook, reported by Tom’s Hardware on October 1, 2026, was also cautious: CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said demand would exceed supply in 2027 and 2028, and that he could not see when supply and demand would return to balance. Micron projected industry DRAM and NAND shipment growth in the low-to-mid 20s percentage range for each of the next two years, while still expecting constrained supply. Those are company forecasts, not guaranteed outcomes. Tom’s Hardware’s report on Micron’s forecast presents the comments from the company’s FY2026 earnings call.
DRAM and NAND do not have identical outlooks
DRAM is the part of the market TrendForce expects to remain especially tight. NAND Flash, commonly used for storage, could see conditions loosen in the second half of 2027 as new capacity enters production. A forecast of easing NAND supply therefore does not mean DRAM constraints will ease at the same time, or that either console maker will receive all the components it needs at a particular price.

What has Xbox said about component costs and supply?
In an employee message published June 10, 2026, Xbox leadership said console storage component prices had more than doubled twice since the previous fall, forecast another significant increase by the 2027 holiday season, and said memory costs had followed a broadly similar trajectory. The message also said Xbox could not make as many consoles as players wanted. These statements concern Xbox’s component costs and console availability; they do not quantify a future Helix price or establish that Project Helix production has been delayed. Xbox’s June update is the company’s account of those pressures.
For buyers, the practical risk is that elevated component costs and constrained supply could complicate pricing or availability when a new console is eventually announced. Microsoft has acknowledged those concerns for Helix, but has not stated a launch price, a release window or how many units it expects to produce.

Is PS6 delayed because of the memory shortage?
No reviewed source confirms that Sony has delayed PS6 or announced a PS6 launch date because of memory constraints. S&P Global Market Intelligence discussed a likely 2028 shelf window for the next console generation as an analyst outlook; it is not a Sony announcement and does not prove a PS6 delay. S&P Global’s May 2026 discussion should be read as commentary on the market and gaming hardware, not confirmation of Sony’s plans.
