The dead golfer hidden in Golden Tee ’99 is course designer Jim Zielinski himself. He told software engineer Tino Kalafatis that the figure is a digitized photo of him lying in grass outside the office, added as a funny detail for players who hit an errant shot into the woods. The body is on hole seven of the Aspen Lake course.
Where to find the dead golfer in Golden Tee ’99
On Aspen Lake’s seventh hole, look in the woods to the right, roughly 180 yards from the tee. The pixelated scene shows a prone figure beside a golf club and a pool of blood. It is easy to miss during ordinary play because it sits off the intended route of the hole.
Who is the figure, and why is he there?
Jim Zielinski, a Golden Tee course designer and co-creator, identified the figure as himself. As reported by PC Gamer’s Wes Fenlon, software engineer Tino Kalafatis—who had worked at Incredible Technologies since the 1980s—asked Zielinski directly and relayed his response to the publication.
Zielinski said the developers wanted to put interesting things in the woods for players whose shots went astray. He described the body as a digitized photograph of himself lying in grass outside the office. In other words, the image is a deliberate off-course Easter egg, not an unidentified golfer or a story clue.

Zielinski also recalled putting digitized images of himself behind the first tee on several early Golden Tee 3D courses. Friends and family could find him by starting a game and turning around.
How the mystery was solved
The first lead came from artist Stephen Alexander, whose later work included BioShock and BioShock Infinite. Alexander told Fenlon that he vaguely remembered the image but did not know how it had been added. He guessed Zielinski might have placed it, since Zielinski handled much of the art placement in that version. That was a guess, not confirmation; Zielinski’s answer, relayed through Kalafatis, supplied the identification and explanation.

PC Gamer’s feature, published October 6, 2026, is the reporting source for those recollections and Fenlon’s observations. The explanation comes from Zielinski as relayed by Kalafatis, rather than from a separately reviewed interview transcript.
Why does the blood appear in some versions but not others?
Fenlon reported seeing the body without visible blood in the Steam collection Golden Tee Arcade Classics, but seeing blood in his MAME presentation. These are observations of the presentations he examined, not proof that every Steam or MAME setup displays the same way.

Zielinski speculated that there might have been two versions—one with blood and another in which the pool was removed—but said he was not sure. Fenlon noted two listed Golden Tee ’99 revisions, v1.00 and v1.00S, then reported that a v1.00S ROM loaded in MAME showed both the body and blood, along with additional spectators and course details. That observation does not establish the cause of the Steam/MAME difference, and it does not support a claim that the “S” revision removed the blood. The feature left the discrepancy unresolved.

The feature also points to a Sasquatch-like figure near the green as a humorous cliffhanger. Its identity and behavior are not explained in the reporting, so it should not be treated as a confirmed creature or a verified game mechanic.
