The app I mean is the Google app, a free download from Google Play that puts Google Search and related tools on your phone. It is a useful first install if you want Google’s search features, but it is not a requirement for setting up an Android phone. Setup priorities are connecting to a network, securing your phone and Google Account, and deciding whether to transfer data from your old device.
Why the Google app is a useful first download
Because the original title does not name the tool, this recommendation identifies it as the Google app: its official Google Play listing describes Google Search alongside other search-related features. Depending on your device, language, location and account, the listing includes text and visual search, Lens, AI Mode and Search Live. These are app features, not capabilities guaranteed on every Android phone.
Circle to Search has additional limits: Google says it is available only on select premium Android phones and in some languages and locations. The Play listing also cautions that features may not be available in every country. Check the listing and your phone’s compatibility rather than assuming every tool will appear.
Install the app from Google Play if you want those Google search features. If you prefer another search provider, Android supports other search widgets and, in some eligible regional contexts, provider choice screens. Those screens are not universal; the available choices and rules depend on location and eligibility. The available official guidance does not establish a balanced feature or privacy comparison between search providers, so choose according to your own preferences and check the relevant app’s details.

What to do before exploring apps
Google’s Android setup guidance covers connectivity, adding a Google Account, screen lock and account recovery. The exact sequence and labels can vary by phone, so follow the prompts on your device. Downloading the Google app is not listed as a prerequisite for completing setup.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Keep your connection available during setup, especially if you plan to restore or copy data.
- Add your Google Account if you use one. Have your sign-in details ready. If you cannot access the account later, recovery options can help you regain access; set them up while you are signed in.
- Create a screen lock. Choose a PIN, pattern or password offered by your phone. This protects access to the device and may be needed for some setup actions.
- Decide whether to copy data from your old phone. Make this decision during initial setup: Google says the transfer option may not be available later.
These are general setup priorities, not a promise that every manufacturer shows identical screens. Google’s guide to switching to a new Android device covers Android-to-Android and iOS-to-Android moves, and notes that the steps vary by device.

Choose how to copy data from your old phone
For an Android-to-Android move, Google recommends having both phones online. It recommends cable transfer, while also supporting wireless transfer; Google says both methods support the same data. A cable must fit both phones, so you may need an adapter. Check the ports on both devices before relying on a cable.
| Transfer method | What to check | What Google says |
|---|---|---|
| Cable | Whether the cable fits both phones; an adapter may be needed. | Recommended by Google. The option supports the same data as wireless transfer. |
| Wireless | Keep both phones online and follow the on-screen instructions. | Supported by Google and described as transferring the same data as cable. |
Google notes that some transfer steps work only on Android 10 and later. Samsung phones may offer Smart Switch options. If you are moving from an iPhone, follow the new phone’s prompts: depending on the device and flow, Google describes QR pairing or a cable. Don’t assume a particular screen or method will appear on every model.

Install the Google app after setup—or during it
Once you reach the home screen, open Google Play, search for “Google,” and select the app published by Google LLC. Review the app listing and install it if its features suit you. You can do this during setup if your phone offers Play access, or wait until setup is complete; installing it is a separate choice, not a condition of using Android.
Google Play store figures such as download counts, review totals and ratings change over time, so they are not a dependable reason on their own to install an app. Focus instead on whether you want Google Search and the listed features, and whether those features are available on your device and in your region.
