Turn off Windows 11’s transparency and animation effects to reduce visual polish and, on some older or lower-powered laptops, potentially make the system feel smoother. There is no established battery-life or speed figure for this change, and the difference may be negligible on modern gaming PCs. You can disable just one effect or choose a broader setting that removes more visual extras.
Which Windows 11 setting should you change?
Windows 11 uses transparency and animated transitions for parts of its interface. Microsoft notes that visual effects can use system resources, but that does not mean switching them off will produce a measurable improvement on every laptop.
For a modest change, disable transparency and animation effects individually. If you prefer performance over appearance and want to remove more effects at once, use Windows’ broader “Adjust for best performance” option.

Turn off transparency effects
- Open Settings > Personalization > Colors.
- Switch off Transparency effects.
Some Windows 11 builds also expose a Transparency effects toggle under Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects. Settings can vary by build or laptop manufacturer.

Turn off animation effects
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects.
- Switch off Animation effects.
This removes animated transitions and other motion effects from the interface. If you find the reduced motion less comfortable, return to the same setting and switch it back on.
Disable more effects at once
- Search Windows for Adjust Windows appearance and performance.
- Open the matching result and select the Visual Effects tab.
- Select Adjust for best performance, then apply the change.
This option disables additional visual effects beyond the two individual toggles, so expect a plainer-looking Windows interface. Windows builds may present the dialog or available options somewhat differently.

What improvement should you expect?
Older laptops and mini PCs may feel smoother after visual effects are reduced, and using fewer effects may help battery life in some cases. The available guidance provides no measured speedup or battery-runtime figure for this change. On modern gaming PCs, the effect can be negligible.
Try the individual toggles first if you want to preserve most of Windows’ appearance. Use the broader performance option only if you are comfortable giving up more visual effects; you can reverse any of these changes through the same settings.

Other settings that affect battery or sign-in
Disable unnecessary startup apps
To stop apps you do not need from loading at sign-in, open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable selected entries. This targets startup activity; it is separate from visual rendering and does not directly make Windows’ core interface faster. You can re-enable an app from the same list.
Choose a battery-focused power mode
Windows power mode is a separate control, not part of the visual-effects recommendation. Microsoft says Best performance can drain a laptop’s battery faster and make it warmer. Best power efficiency reduces power use by limiting background activity; it is an optional battery setting, not a prerequisite for changing visual effects. Windows also lets you inspect battery usage by app and manage background activity for apps that provide that control.
