Essencelord, a loot-driven action-adventure RPG for Game Boy Color by developer Tyler Lombard, is in development. You can try a browser demo or download demo ROM files from Lombard’s project page, but those files are not the released full game. A Time Extension report published October 6, 2026, said a Kickstarter campaign was underway and described possible physical rewards; current campaign terms are not confirmed here.
What is Essencelord?
Essencelord is a Game Boy Color game built around combat, equipment decisions, progression and customizable skills. Lombard describes it as “A loot-driven action adventure where gear and skills define your playstyle.” The developer says defeating enemies and bosses earns Essence, which can be spent on leveling up and creating gear. Gear is semi-permanent: there is no inventory, and equipping something means replacing what the player currently has. A Skill Modifier system is intended to let players customize their skills. These are the developer’s descriptions of the project, not independent gameplay findings.
A February 19, 2026 development log called an early version “a Diablo-like ARPG for the Gameboy Color!” That is a dated description of an early build, not confirmation of the final game’s scope. Read the development log.
Can you play it now?
The developer’s Essencelord project page lists the game as in development and offers a browser-playable demo plus downloadable .gbc and .pocket demo files. The page does not establish that the full game has been released.
