In one English-language benchmark reported by The New Stack on October 5, 2026, a roughly 200-million-parameter DeBERTa classifier scored 89.01% accuracy detecting prompt injection—just 0.30 percentage points below Qwen3.6-35B’s 89.31%. Its reported median latency was 54.1 ms, compared with Qwen’s 312.5 ms. That is a promising result for a focused safety check, not proof that a small classifier can replace a large language model across safety tasks.
What the benchmark found
The New Stack reported that Red Hat’s AI Safety team evaluated nine guardrail configurations using NVIDIA’s open-source NeMo Guardrails toolkit. The evaluation covered prompt injection and content safety, comparing purpose-built classifiers, LLM judges, and decision-model approaches. The results below are those reported in that article, rather than an independently verified Red Hat benchmark publication.
Prompt-injection detection
| Approach | Reported accuracy | Reported median latency |
|---|---|---|
| Qwen3.6-35B, used as an LLM judge | 89.31% | 312.5 ms |
| Red Hat DeBERTa classifier, roughly 200 million parameters | 89.01% | 54.1 ms |
| Jev decision model | 86.35% | 348.1 ms |
In this benchmark, the DeBERTa classifier trailed Qwen by 0.30 percentage points in accuracy, while its median latency was 258.4 ms lower. The comparison is not a direct measure of speed on equivalent hardware: the systems used different infrastructure and network paths.
Nor does “35B” mean Qwen used 35 billion parameters for every token. The report describes Qwen3.6-35B as a mixture-of-experts model with about 3 billion parameters active per token. Parameter count alone therefore does not establish an inference-compute ratio.

Content-safety detection
| Approach | Reported accuracy | Reported median latency |
|---|---|---|
| Jev decision model | 86.20% | not stated in The New Stack report |
| DiffusionGemma | 85.53% | not stated in The New Stack report |
| Qwen | 85.47% | not stated in The New Stack report |
| Red Hat Granite Guardian classifier, 125 million parameters | 80.27% | 33.2 ms |
The content-safety ranking differed from the prompt-injection result: Jev, DiffusionGemma, and Qwen scored above Granite Guardian on the reported accuracy metric. Granite Guardian was the fastest option in this benchmark. The report says Red Hat’s content policy covered prejudice, violence, profanity, illegal activity, sexual content, and role-play pretexts.
What “runs on a laptop” means here
The report says pretrained classifiers, Laya, and BART-large-mnli ran on a MacBook Pro with an M1 chip using its CPU. The larger-model comparisons did not all run on that laptop: Qwen, Nemotron, Shieldstral, and DiffusionGemma were served through vLLM on GPU nodes with 96 GB of VRAM in a U.S. East Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS cluster. Jev was accessed through TypeSafe’s API.

Calls were made from the United Kingdom, and Red Hat estimated that the transatlantic network hop added at least 56 ms per request. That context matters when reading latency figures: the table compares the reported deployment paths, not a controlled same-device test. The results do not establish that the classifier requires a MacBook, or that any laptop will reproduce its score or timing.
Policy wording changed the results
Guardrail accuracy depended partly on how the risk was defined. For prompt injection, Nemotron’s reported score rose from 69.37% to 84.84% after Red Hat replaced NVIDIA’s default risk definitions with its own. For content safety, a policy tuned for Laya increased its score from 57.87% to 75.20%, but the same policy reduced Jev’s score from 86.20% to 82.53%.

The report notes that Red Hat’s original risk definitions were adapted from prompts that had worked well for LLM judges and might not suit zero-shot classifiers. These are therefore results for particular model-and-policy combinations, not fixed rankings that can be assumed for another team’s rules or data.
How to choose a guardrail for your application
The benchmark supports a task-based choice rather than a universal winner. A small classifier can be a strong default for a clearly defined risk when a team has enough labeled training data. A zero-shot decision model or LLM judge may be worth its extra latency and cost when a policy is broader and a suitable classifier is unavailable. The report does not establish decision models as replacements for LLM judges.

For a practical evaluation, compare candidates on the dimensions that affect your deployment:
- Risk and policy scope: Decide whether you need a focused check, such as prompt injection, or a broad content policy spanning multiple kinds of harm.
- Training data: Check whether you have enough representative labeled examples to train and validate a task-specific classifier.
- Your own evaluation set: Measure accuracy against the attacks, benign inputs, and policy decisions your application actually encounters; do not treat the reported scores as guaranteed outcomes.
- Policy sensitivity: Test the exact wording you intend to deploy. The reported changes show that definitions can materially affect results.
- End-to-end latency and cost: Measure the full serving path—including network and API time—on the infrastructure you plan to use, and weigh it against compute or service costs.
- Language coverage: Confirm that evaluation examples reflect the languages your users will submit.
Important limits on the findings
The New Stack says the evaluation used English-language datasets. It does not establish how well these guardrails transfer to other languages. Latency figures combine local CPU inference, GPU-hosted inference, an external API, and a transatlantic network path, so they should not be read as an apples-to-apples hardware comparison.

The report also says Red Hat intended both of its classifiers to become default guardrail configurations in OpenShift AI 3.6. That is a reported plan, not confirmation of current release availability.
