Boston Dynamics announced on October 6, 2026, that former Amazon executive Rohit Prasad would become its CEO effective October 7. The company says the appointment supports its effort to combine artificial intelligence with robotics and bring intelligent machines into industrial and commercial settings. Prasad’s appointment to the company’s board is subject to the required approval process.
Who is Rohit Prasad?
Boston Dynamics describes Prasad as an AI leader with experience developing products and machine-learning systems. According to the company, he most recently served as Senior Vice President and Head Scientist for Alexa and Artificial General Intelligence at Amazon. Boston Dynamics credits him with helping build Alexa from its early days and leading development of Amazon Nova foundation models for enterprise use.
Before Amazon, Prasad spent nearly 14 years at Raytheon BBN Technologies, where he led machine-learning research and applications, according to Boston Dynamics. These career details are the company’s account of its incoming CEO’s background.
Why did Boston Dynamics appoint an ex-Amazon executive?
The company says it wants to integrate advanced AI with robotics and commercialize intelligent systems at scale. It describes Prasad’s experience turning AI research into products and services as relevant to productizing robots for industrial, enterprise, and other real-world environments. Boston Dynamics says those systems are intended to improve safety, productivity, and operational efficiency; these are strategic aims, not demonstrated outcomes of the appointment.

Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chair Jaehoon Chang, who chairs Boston Dynamics’ board, framed the hire as a combination of the robotics company’s technology, Prasad’s AI-product experience, and Hyundai’s manufacturing, logistics, and mobility capabilities. Prasad said he plans to bring AI and robotics together to expand the use of intelligent systems in real-world environments. Both statements describe the companies’ ambitions for Physical AI, a term they use for AI applied to physical machines and settings.
What does the appointment mean for Boston Dynamics’ robots?
Boston Dynamics’ portfolio spans robots at different stages and for different tasks. The appointment does not change the stated development status of Atlas: it remains an industrial humanoid platform in development, not a consumer robot available for individual purchase.

Hyundai Motor Group reported in January 2026 that Spot operated in more than 40 countries and that Stretch had unloaded more than 20 million boxes globally since its 2023 launch. Those are Hyundai’s company-reported figures, not independent measures.

Hyundai Motor Group’s January 2026 strategy statement described Atlas as an industrial platform and said deployment at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America was planned by 2028 for sequencing tasks. In September 2026, Boston Dynamics said its Robotics Metaplant Application Center at the plant was training Atlas in automotive manufacturing environments, including logistics and parts sequencing for assembly. The company described component assembly as a later application targeted for 2030.

Boston Dynamics also announced plans to expand Atlas deployment across Hyundai and Kia plants, with a planned deployment of 25,000 units, and to establish a U.S. production facility with planned annual capacity of 30,000 robots. These are announced plans and targets, not completed deployments or production results.
