Verizon leads T-Mobile in one region in J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Wireless Network Quality Performance Study—North Central—and in three categories listed in a January 2026 Opensignal summary: 5G Video Experience, 5G Live Video Experience, and Coverage Experience. Those findings do not amount to a general Verizon win: J.D. Power ranked T-Mobile highest in two regions and tied the carriers in three, while T-Mobile says it won 12 of Opensignal’s 16 categories.
What are the two things Verizon does better?
The headline’s “two counts” is not a single, objectively established verdict. The evidence points to distinct comparisons: J.D. Power’s regional measure of customer-reported network problems favors Verizon in North Central, and an Opensignal January 2026 summary lists Verizon ahead in three named experience categories. These studies measure different things, so neither supports saying Verizon is simply better overall.
J.D. Power: fewer reported problems in North Central
In J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Wireless Network Quality Performance Study—Volume 1, Verizon scored 6 problems per 100 uses (PP100) in North Central, compared with T-Mobile’s 8 PP100. Verizon ranked highest in the region and T-Mobile ranked third. PP100 reflects reported problems; it is not a direct measure of coverage or data speed.
The study included 20,050 wireless customers, including users of phones, tablets, and mobile broadband devices. Fieldwork ran from June through November 2025. J.D. Power senior director of technology, media and telecom Carl Lepper said, “Despite generational differences in the types of problems experienced, one thing is clear: wireless network quality is strong.” He also said major carriers were delivering consistent performance, with average overall problems per 100 uses steady at or below 9 over the prior year.

Opensignal: leads in selected video and coverage categories
A January 2026 Opensignal result summary lists Verizon as a leader in 5G Video Experience, 5G Live Video Experience, and Coverage Experience. These are category-level results, not an overall ranking. T-Mobile’s own January 2026 account says it won 12 of Opensignal’s 16 categories. The detailed Opensignal report was not available to verify here, so scores, category definitions, and methodology should not be inferred from the summary.

The results are region-level rankings, not a guarantee about service at a particular address. They also concern reported problems, which is a different yardstick from Opensignal’s video and coverage categories.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Verizon better than T-Mobile where you live?
Not necessarily. A regional or category-level result cannot tell you which carrier will work best at your home, workplace, commute, or other places you rely on service. Check both carriers’ coverage information for those locations, then consider a local trial or other return option if available under the carrier’s current terms.

Before switching, compare equivalent plans for the number of lines you need. Account for the monthly price, taxes and fees, premium data conditions, hotspot allowance, roaming, included benefits, and activation or upgrade charges. Verizon’s comparison page describes its own plan structure and contrasts it with T-Mobile’s, but it is carrier-published material—not an independent assessment—and plan details can change. Confirm current terms directly with both carriers rather than treating a plan comparison or network study as a complete buying decision.

How to interpret the results
- Customer-reported problems: J.D. Power’s PP100 scores indicate reported problem frequency in the study’s regions; they do not directly answer every question about speed or signal reach.
- Specific experience categories: Opensignal’s listed video and coverage leaders address named categories, not every aspect of network quality. Its 16-category total cited by T-Mobile gives a broader but still category-based picture.
- Your own service needs: Location, plan conditions, and the places you use your phone can outweigh a result measured across a region or a selected category.
