In a 2026 study, researchers use fuzzy numbers and alpha-cuts to extend chaotic skew maps, then test map-generated sequences in a simulated image-encryption scheme. The results suggest stability across the parameter configurations they tested; they do not establish that the method is ready for deployment or secure against practical attacks.
Why parameter uncertainty matters
A chaotic map’s behavior depends on its parameters. In a real system, those values may not be perfectly precise because of measurement error, hardware limits, numerical approximations, or imperfect key generation. The researchers describe these as motivations for the work, not as problems their study measured in a deployed device. As they are quoted in an Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral research highlight dated 6 October 2026: “Real-world cryptographic systems cannot always rely on perfectly precise parameters.”
The proposed response is to model a parameter as uncertain rather than treat it as a single exact number. This is a way to analyze how a family of possible parameter values affects the map; it is not, by itself, a guarantee that an encryption system will tolerate every real-world error.
How fuzzy skew maps represent uncertainty
In “Fuzzy Skew Maps: Preserving Robust Chaos Under Uncertainty with Applications to Cryptography,” Illych Alvarez, Antonio S. E. Chong, Jorge Chamba, Ximena Quiñonez, and Ivy Peña introduce fuzzy skew maps. The article appeared in Mathematics 14(6), article 1010, on 17 March 2026. The authors extend robustly chaotic skew transformations by representing the uncertain skew parameter with a fuzzy number.

The analysis uses alpha-cuts: at each membership level, an alpha-cut gives a set of parameter values to consider. Examining the map across these sets lets the authors characterize its behavior under parameter uncertainty. This is a set-based treatment, rather than a claim based on averaging outcomes according to a probability distribution. How the study applies the model to image encryption
The authors demonstrate the approach with a simulated grayscale image-encryption scheme. A key includes an initial condition and a fuzzy parameter. Iterating the map produces sequences that the example uses for two operations:

- Pixel permutation, or confusion: the sequence determines how image pixels are rearranged.
- XOR masking, or diffusion: the sequence is used to mask image values through XOR operations.
Decryption uses the same fuzzy key. The paper evaluates triangular, trapezoidal, and truncated Gaussian parameterizations. These are configurations in the study’s experiments, not user-selectable modes in a released product.
What the reported results show—and what they do not
Across the alpha-cuts tested, the authors report NPCR values of 99.58–99.64%, UACI values of 33.41–33.52%, cipher entropy near 8 bits, and adjacent-pixel correlation close to zero. They describe these indicators as stable across the tested fuzzy parameter configurations.

These figures are results from the paper’s numerical experiments. They describe measured properties of the tested ciphertexts, but they do not alone show that an encryption method withstands practical cryptanalysis. A strong-looking image metric is not a substitute for analysis of key management, implementation, threat models, or attacks, and the study does not provide independent certification.
The paper also compares its fuzzy skew maps with fuzzy versions of logistic, tent, and Chebyshev chaotic maps using NPCR, UACI, entropy, and pixel correlation across parameter alpha-cuts. The authors report slightly stronger indicators for their proposed maps in those simulations. That comparison is limited to the evaluated methods and metrics; it does not establish superiority over standard, widely deployed cryptographic ciphers.

Is this a practical encryption system today?
No product or deployed system is established by the paper. It presents a mathematical proposal supported by analysis and simulation. The research highlight mentions medical images, IoT devices, embedded systems, and real-time communications as possible application areas, not as settings in which the method has been implemented or validated.
Hardware implementation, further complexity measures, and large-scale evaluation of fuzzy-chaotic protocols are identified as future research directions. The authors conclude in their abstract: “These results support fuzzy skew maps as a robust primitive for secure information systems operating under parametric uncertainty.” That is the authors’ interpretation of their results, not evidence of an independent security audit or production readiness.
