That is a workload- and model-specific estimate—not proof that Claude is better for every subscriber or task.
What the study’s “five times the value” claim means
SemiAnalysis compared subscription usage limits and converted estimated token capacity into API-equivalent dollars for a specified workload mix. The Register reported the result on October 6, 2026. The estimate concerns the mid-tier models and assumptions included in that comparison; it is not an independent product test by The Register or a universal measure of consumer value. The Register’s October 6 report summarizes the finding, while SemiAnalysis’s October 5 analysis describes its methodology.
SemiAnalysis’s co-authors Andrew Megalaa, Max Kan, and Dylan Patel put the point this way: “Put differently, it doesn’t make sense to say a plan is worth $X in isolation—you need to consider the full (plan, model, workload) tuple.” In other words, the result can change when a subscriber uses a different model or asks it to do different work.
What the reported token estimates do—and don’t—show
As reported by The Register, SemiAnalysis estimated monthly capacity of 2.9 billion tokens for Claude Pro and 1 billion for ChatGPT at the $20-per-month tier. These are estimates from the analysis, not independently measured monthly allowances guaranteed to each subscriber. Token volume is not the same as useful work completed: a larger token estimate does not establish equal answer quality, task success, or time saved.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
API-equivalent value is a price comparison based on converting estimated subscription usage into the cost of API tokens for a chosen workload. It is distinct from both raw token volume and cost per successfully completed task. The analysis itself cautions that API prices differ and that token totals may not represent task outcomes. No universal consumer-value result follows from the calculation.
How SemiAnalysis estimated subscription capacity
SemiAnalysis says it isolated token types through repeated calls, observed changes in usage meters, estimated monthly capacity from five-hour and weekly limits, and converted estimated usage into API-equivalent dollars for its selected workload mix. The result therefore depends on the measurement approach and assumptions as well as the plans and models compared.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Plan limits: providers can change usage caps, so a capacity estimate can become outdated.
- Model and token type: different models and kinds of tokens can affect usage and API pricing.
- Workload: a token mix chosen for one set of tasks may not resemble an individual subscriber’s use.
- Task outcomes: token counts and API-equivalent dollars do not say whether a model completed a task well.
What Claude Pro currently costs and includes
Anthropic’s pricing page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists Claude Pro at $20 monthly or $200 billed annually, displayed as $17 per month with annual billing. It lists Max from $100 per month. Anthropic says Pro adds usage and features including Claude Code; Max offers five or 20 times Pro usage, higher output limits, and priority access during high-traffic periods. Applicable taxes may be extra, usage limits apply, and Anthropic says, “Price and plans are subject to change at Anthropic’s discretion.” Check Anthropic’s pricing page for current terms.
Those plan descriptions do not make a fixed number of messages or tokens predictable for every subscriber. Anthropic’s Help Center says Claude usage varies with message and attachment length, conversation length, model, and feature. It describes both a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit. See Anthropic’s explanation of Pro usage limits for the details.

How to decide which subscription is better value for you
Use the study as one input, then compare the current plan terms against the work you actually do. A higher token allowance or lower API-equivalent cost is most relevant if the included models handle your tasks well and you regularly approach the plan’s limits.
- Match the model to your tasks. Compare the models available in each plan for your regular work rather than treating all tokens or models as interchangeable.
- Check current pricing and usage rules. Review the provider’s current plan page and limit descriptions; both available models and usage meters can change. Anthropic’s current prices and limits are described in the linked official pages above.
- Consider how often you hit limits. Session and weekly caps, as well as the length of conversations and attachments, affect how much a subscription is worth in practice.
- Judge completed work, not volume alone. Consider whether the plan reliably finishes your tasks to the quality you need. The SemiAnalysis estimate does not establish which service performs better on your own work.
- Separate chat subscriptions from API access. If you need programmatic API calls, include that requirement in your comparison rather than assuming a consumer plan covers it.
Does Claude Pro include API usage?
No. Anthropic’s Help Center states that a paid Claude.ai plan does not include API usage through Console. A chat subscription and Console API usage are separate, so someone who needs API access should compare the applicable API costs and terms separately. Anthropic’s usage-limit article explains this distinction.

What the comparison cannot establish about OpenAI plans
The reviewed sources do not establish OpenAI’s current official consumer pricing and usage schedule. The study’s reported comparison is a dated estimate, and OpenAI plan terms may change; check OpenAI’s live plan details before making a current price or feature comparison. The evidence here also does not establish that either subscription offers better value for every user or task.
