Removal: answer a threat or clear the board
Swords to Plowshares
This is a single-target answer to a creature, with life gained by the removed creature’s controller as a trade-off. It shows white’s ability to handle an individual threat efficiently while giving something back to the opponent.
Solitude
Solitude pairs creature removal with a creature body and has an alternate evoke cost. It represents a different kind of flexibility: the effect can be used without paying the card’s usual mana cost, at the cost described by its evoke mechanic. Check the card’s current Oracle text for exact timing and costs.
Wrath of God
Rather than answer just one creature, Wrath of God is a broad creature-removal effect. Its role is a reset when a board has become difficult to manage, though it also affects the caster’s creatures.

Protection: keep your resources safe
Mother of Runes
Mother of Runes can protect another creature from a chosen color. It is a compact example of repeatable, targeted defense: the player must choose when to use the ability and which creature needs help.
Teferi’s Protection
Teferi’s Protection is a high-impact defensive spell that phases out its caster and permanents. It can preserve a player’s position through a dangerous turn, making it a very different kind of protection from a creature ability aimed at one ally.

Taxation and restrictions: make opponents adjust their plans
Ghostly Prison
Ghostly Prison taxes opponents who want to attack its controller. It does not remove attackers; it makes attacking a choice with a mana cost, which can redirect pressure or constrain an opponent’s available resources.
Esper Sentinel
Esper Sentinel is a small creature that taxes opponents’ noncreature spells and may generate cards. It illustrates how white can turn an opponent’s routine actions into a decision: pay the cost or risk giving the Sentinel’s controller a card.

Silence
Silence restricts an opponent from casting spells for a turn. Unlike a lasting defensive tax, it is a temporary restriction whose value depends on timing and what the opponent is trying to do.
Tutoring: find a particular kind of resource
Enlightened Tutor
Enlightened Tutor searches for an artifact or enchantment. Its significance is not that it finds anything in a deck, but that it helps locate a specific category of resource; what it can find depends on the deck’s contents and the card’s current rules text.

Archangel Elspeth is a planeswalker associated with developing and strengthening a creature board. It represents white’s creature-building role alongside its better-known removal and defensive tools.
Resets: change the whole resource picture
Balance
Balance is presented as an effect that equalizes resources across cards, creatures, and lands. That broad reach makes it a distinct example of white’s reset effects, but its rules and format implications should be checked before considering it for a deck.

Armageddon
Armageddon destroys lands across the table. It is a stark example of a resource reset, not simply a way to remove an opponent’s threat. Because it can sharply disrupt a game and leave players unable to participate normally, its fit depends heavily on format, deck plan, and the expectations of the group.

- Choose by role. Decide whether the deck needs removal, protection, a tax, a tutor, creature development, or a reset; these cards are not interchangeable.
- Consider scope and trade-off. A single-target answer, a board-wide effect, and protection for your own resources solve different problems and affect other players differently.
- Check format legality. The list spans different eras and styles and is not a claim that every card is legal or suitable in every format. Confirm a card’s current status in the format you play before building around it.
- For Commander, check color identity. Wizards explains that a card’s color identity can come from its casting cost and mana symbols in its text, and every card in a Commander deck must fit the commander’s identity. See Wizards’ Commander format page for the current format information.
- Match disruptive cards to the table. Broad resource resets and restrictive effects can change the experience for every player. Discuss those play patterns with the group rather than treating inclusion as an automatic upgrade.
- Check current Commander brackets and Game Changers. Wizards’ format page describes brackets 1 and 2 as excluding Game Changers, bracket 3 as allowing up to three, and brackets 4 and 5 as allowing unlimited Game Changers. Consult the live page and list; do not infer that a card here is a Game Changer from its inclusion in this guide.
The twelve selections come from a third-party article published October 6, 2026, whose headline says 11 while its text names 12 distinct cards. The count is corrected here.
