Human evolution is relevant to aggression, but it also includes cooperation, avoidance, and peacemaking. The evidence supports neither “humans are naturally peaceful” nor “humans are destined to be violent” as a settled conclusion.
The more useful question is how different kinds of aggression arise, under what conditions they occur, and what the available evidence can—and cannot—tell us about them.
What does “hardwired for violence” get wrong?
“Hardwired” blurs several distinct claims. A behavior can have evolutionary roots without being genetically determined, unavoidable, or constant across circumstances. Evolutionary explanations may describe a capacity, a propensity, or a strategy that can pay off under some conditions; they do not establish that every person will act violently or that every society must do so.
A 2013 review, “When Violence Pays,” treats aggression in terms of its costs and benefits. That framing matters: behavior that may have advantages in one context can be costly or constrained in another. An evolutionary origin is not the same thing as a fixed outcome.

Which kind of violence are we talking about?
Individual assault, homicide, warfare, and aggression between groups are related questions, but they are not interchangeable. Evidence about lethal conflict between groups cannot by itself establish how common interpersonal violence is, and evidence of an injury does not necessarily show that a war took place. Broad claims about “human nature” often become misleading when they slide between these categories.
- Individual aggression concerns actions between people, which may or may not be lethal.
- Homicide is lethal interpersonal violence; it is not a measure of every form of aggression.
- Warfare and intergroup aggression concern organized or group-level conflict. They raise questions about social organization and relations between groups as well as individual behavior.
What can the evidence about the human past show?
Researchers draw on different sources, and each answers a different part of the question. A source can offer evidence of injury, patterns of conflict, or evolutionary history without revealing every cause or motive.

These sources should be read together cautiously, not treated as interchangeable measures. What survived in the archaeological record, what was documented ethnographically, and what comparative evolutionary analysis can infer are different kinds of evidence.
Why do researchers disagree about early human violence?
There is a persistent debate over how much aggression and competition, compared with cooperation and nonaggression, shaped human evolution. The 2018 review of hunter-gatherer research describes disagreements over both the interpretation and use of ethnographic and archaeological evidence. That makes broad claims based on a few examples especially risky.

The evidence does not require choosing between a uniformly peaceful ancestral past and a uniformly violent one. The 2016 phylogenetic study argues that lethal intergroup violence has deep evolutionary roots, while also describing avoidance and friendly relations with neighboring groups as responses to intergroup conditions. A history that includes aggression can also include ways of avoiding it.
Does biology explain aggression without determining it?
A 2023 review, “Evolutionary and neuroendocrine foundations of human aggression,” describes a peace–violence paradox: humans can be exceptionally peaceful and exceptionally violent. It reviews a social evolutionary theory intended to account for that combination, alongside different forms of aggression and biological correlates. It is a contemporary theoretical synthesis, not final proof of a single causal model.

That distinction is central. Biological capacities may be part of an explanation, but the presence of a capacity does not tell us when it will be expressed, how often, or in what form. The evidence summarized here does not establish one genetic, hormonal, cultural, or economic mechanism as a complete explanation for violence across societies.

A 2017 chapter by Hill and colleagues reviews evidence and hypotheses concerning sex differences, male contest competition, and coalitional aggression. Those evolutionary interpretations are part of a contested field; proposed adaptive explanations should not be confused with observations themselves.

Population-level patterns, where reported, do not determine any individual’s behavior. The chapter also discusses human peacemaking and the possibility of protracted periods without violence toward rival groups. This makes it inappropriate to turn a claim about average tendencies into a claim that all men—or all people—are naturally violent.
What is the most defensible conclusion?
Evolutionary history can inform the study of human aggression, but it does not settle whether violence is inevitable or how much it shapes life in any particular society. The evidence points to a species with capacities for aggression as well as cooperation, avoidance, and peacemaking. “Hardwired for violence” is therefore too blunt: it mistakes a possible capacity or context-sensitive strategy for an unavoidable human destiny.
