Then open that link and check that the content you need is actually there. If the page matters, also save a local copy while the original still loads: an archive link is useful, but it is not a complete website backup.
Save a public copy with the Wayback Machine
- Copy the full URL of the specific page you want to preserve, not just the site’s homepage.
- Open the Wayback Machine and choose Save Page Now.
- Paste the page URL and submit it. Wait for the result page; submitting the form alone does not confirm that a capture succeeded.
- Copy the timestamped archived URL shown after the capture.
- Open the archived URL in a separate tab. Check the text and any important images, charts, tables, or other elements.
Internet Archive describes this as saving one page, not multiple pages, directories, or an entire website. A capture may include images and CSS, but it does not capture the page’s outlinks. Crawling restrictions or some SSL settings can also prevent a save. Internet Archive’s Save Pages help page explains the service’s scope and workflow.
Keep a local copy as well
A local file gives you a copy under your control, separate from whether a public archive can capture or replay the page. In your browser, use its save-page command to retain a page file, or use the print command and select Save as PDF. Save the file with a descriptive name. Record the original URL and the date you captured it in the filename or a note stored alongside it.
These formats have trade-offs: a PDF can be easy to read and share, but may flatten or omit interactive content; a saved webpage can depend on associated files and may not preserve behavior that relies on the original site. Neither format should be assumed to retain every feature. For formal or high-stakes records, preserve context and follow the relevant organization’s records-management policy.

Choose a method for the job

What an archived page may not preserve
A remote archive is a snapshot of what its crawler could access, not a fully working copy of the original website. Internet Archive lists several reasons a page can be absent or incomplete: a crawler may not have discovered it; the page may be password-protected, blocked by robots.txt, otherwise inaccessible, or excluded at the owner’s request. JavaScript-driven behavior can be difficult to archive, and missing assets can leave broken images. In some incomplete replays, links may lead to a capture from a nearby date or to the live page. Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine help describes these limitations.
Interactive features may not work, and links—including links inside documents—can fail or lead to the live web. The UK Government Web Archive explains these limits for its own service; they illustrate why a replay should not be treated as a functioning clone or as proof that every element was captured.

Verify the capture and troubleshoot failures
- No success page or archived URL: Do not assume the submission worked. Retry with the exact page URL, and save a local copy while the original remains available.
- Page missing or capture blocked: Access restrictions, crawler blocking, SSL issues, or an exclusion request may prevent capture. A public crawler cannot archive content it cannot access.
- Text appears but an image or chart is missing: The page and its assets may not have been captured together. Inspect the archived result, and keep a local copy if that element matters.
- Buttons, search, or other interactive content does not work: An archive snapshot may preserve appearance without the original site’s behavior. Use the local copy as a reading record, but do not expect it to recreate a working application.
- Archived links open unexpected content: Replay can involve other archived dates or the live web. Check the URL and capture date before relying on the destination.
If the first public archive is incomplete, try a local save immediately and consider another public snapshot service. No remote crawler can promise to preserve every page element.
Preserve the citation and context
When citing an archived page, cite the webpage as usual and add its Wayback Machine information. Keep the original URL, archived URL, capture date, and access date when relevant. Internet Archive’s guidance is at How to cite material archived on the Wayback Machine.

A contemporaneous public snapshot is not automatically a legally authenticated record. Internet Archive says the Wayback Machine was not expressly designed for legal use and directs people seeking certified records to its affidavit request process. For legal or regulatory needs, consult applicable records-management requirements or a qualified adviser. For U.S. government agencies, NARA’s web records guidance discusses preserving snapshots with context such as a site map and setting capture frequency according to risk; that is agency guidance, not a universal personal standard.
