Keep your website online and make the current way to reach your business easy to find. First confirm the route, entrance and any changes to parking or pickup with the road project authority or your business’s site contact. Then publish a prominent temporary notice, update your business listings and revise the information whenever access changes.

Confirm the access details before you publish

Construction routes and access arrangements depend on the specific project. Contact the road project owner, municipality, property manager or site contact and verify the facts customers need:

  • When the change starts and, if confirmed, when it is expected to end.
  • Which approaches are closed and whether local access to the business remains open.
  • Which entrance customers should use, including pedestrian access where relevant.
  • Whether parking, accessible entry, pickup, delivery or opening hours have changed.
  • Whether an authority has designated an official detour, and which project contact can confirm future changes.

Do not call a route an official detour unless the authority has designated it that way. Do not promise that a route is open, safe, accessible or suitable for every vehicle unless that has been confirmed. MnDOT’s construction guidance for businesses discusses access, project contacts and temporary signage; check with the relevant local authority for your project.

Write a notice customers can act on

Place a concise notice on the homepage and the location or contact page. If customers commonly land on a location-specific page from search, put the notice there too. Google Search Central recommends a banner or popup to explain a temporary business change and advises businesses to tell customers about relevant delays or changes to pickup and delivery.

Include the change and when it applies, whether you are open, the confirmed approach or entrance, any confirmed parking or pickup changes, and a working contact method for customers who need help. Add a date range or next-update date only if it is confirmed.

For example: “We’re open during roadwork. From [confirmed date], use [confirmed approach] and enter through [confirmed entrance]. [Confirmed parking or pickup detail]. Need help finding us? Call [phone number].” Replace every bracketed item with verified information; omit anything you cannot confirm.

Make directions clear on mobile

Use familiar street names and landmarks, and keep the wording direct. A small map can help if it is accurate and readable on a phone. Label a route as customer directions unless the road authority has approved it as an official detour. Check that the notice is visible without requiring visitors to dismiss several unrelated overlays.

Update your business listings and hours

Review your Google Business Profile and make sure its address or service area, phone number, website link and customer-facing hours match the real-world business. Google’s business representation guidelines cover accurate business details. Use special hours for temporary changes where appropriate; Google says to mark the business temporarily closed if it will be closed for seven or more consecutive days or for an unknown period. See Google’s instructions for special hours.

If your site uses Local Business structured data, update the opening hours to reflect the current situation. Google Search Central says Search Console can request recrawling for a limited number of updated pages; sitemaps are an option for larger groups. A recrawl request does not guarantee that search results will update immediately. See Google’s temporary website guidance. Google also publishes policies for business links, including location-specific links.

Keep the notice current and coordinate physical signs

Google advises businesses facing a temporary interruption to preserve the site rather than remove it. As Google Search Central puts it: “If your situation is temporary and you plan to reopen your online business, we recommend that you take action that preserves as much of your site’s standing in Search as possible.” Keep the page available, check it when the route or schedule changes, and remove or revise the notice when the access arrangement ends.

If customers could miss the entrance, ask the property owner and project team whether temporary signs are permitted and where they may be placed. Check local placement rules before putting a sign on a sidewalk or other public space. MnDOT identifies temporary signage as one possible construction communication, not an endorsement of any particular sign.

For a physical sign, consider whether drivers or pedestrians on the actual approach can see and read it, whether it will remain stable in local conditions, and how easily it can be moved or updated. For a printed route notice, prioritize route accuracy, mobile readability and the time needed to revise or produce it. These are practical selection considerations, not measured product comparisons. Keep a simple record of who confirmed each route or access detail and when, then recheck it as conditions change.

If you need a clean screenshot of the updated notice for review or documentation, ScreenshotNeo can capture a page with one GET request. Its consent-banner, newsletter-popup and chat-widget cleanup can be turned off step by step, and it says bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed. It also offers an MCP server with tools for AI agents, and includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Common problems to check

  • The notice conflicts with a listing: compare the website, Google Business Profile and actual operating hours, then correct whichever is out of date.
  • The route or end date is uncertain: confirm with the project contact before publishing a route or date. If only the current access facts are verified, publish those and leave out an unconfirmed end date.
  • Customers still cannot find the entrance: verify that the page names the right approach and entrance, then ask the property owner and project team about permitted temporary signs.
  • Search results have not changed yet: update the page and its structured hours first; a recrawl request can be made for a limited number of pages, but it does not promise immediate display.
