Mars appears to have assembled unusually quickly; Earth’s inferred ingredients include material from farther out in the Solar System. Those are evidence-based reconstructions, not a single proven recipe for how either planet formed.
How the evidence compares
| Formation clue | Earth | Mars |
|---|---|---|
| Early growth | The sources cited here do not state a comparable accretion timescale for Earth. | A 2011 isotope study inferred that Mars reached about half its present size in 1.8 (+0.9/−1.0) million years or less. This is an inference from isotope systematics, not a direct observation of the planet forming. Dauphas and Pourmand, Nature (2011) |
| Building-material signature | A 2023 silicon-isotope study estimated that Earth’s precursors included 26 ± 9 per cent isotopically rich outer Solar System material. This is the paper’s model-based estimate, not a settled inventory of every ingredient. Nature (2023) | The same study reported a μ30Si value of −5.8 ± 3.0 ppm and argued that Mars formed before chondrite parent bodies were incorporated. Nature (2023) |
| Basic structure and scale | Earth has a core, mantle and crust. NASA Earth facts | Mars also has a core, mantle and crust, and is about half Earth’s size. NASA Mars facts |
| Preservation of early records | Tectonics recycles crust, while mantle convection has blended some early compositional differences. NASA/JPL InSight science overview | Mars can retain older interior compositional differences, making it a record of early rocky-planet evolution. NASA/JPL InSight science overview |
| Water and climate | Some evidence indicates that building blocks similar to those supplying water to Earth also contributed water to Mars’s interior; the cited finding does not establish equal total water inventories. NASA (2013) | Mars’s crust and atmosphere water record a different history from its interior water. NASA describes an ancient warmer, wetter Mars and a thin atmosphere today. Why Mars’s early growth matters
Planetary formation is not directly observable as it happens, so researchers infer its timing from chemical and isotopic traces preserved in meteorites and planetary materials. The 2011 study’s rapid-growth estimate supports the idea that Mars was a stranded planetary embryo: it grew quickly but did not continue accreting enough material to become a larger planet like Earth. The embryo interpretation is a hypothesis supported by the isotope evidence, not a confirmed step-by-step account of Mars’s formation.
The distinction is important: “formed quickly” does not mean scientists watched Mars assemble or know every collision in its history. It describes what the isotope systematics imply about the timing of its growth.
What isotope differences say about planetary building materials
Isotopes are versions of an element with different numbers of neutrons. Their relative abundances can preserve clues about the sources of material that went into a planet. The silicon-isotope study uses these signatures to distinguish the planets’ accreted materials and to infer that Earth incorporated some material associated with farther out in the Solar System, while Mars formed earlier relative to the incorporation of chondrite parent bodies.

These findings support different accretion histories, but they do not identify a complete, universally accepted recipe. The measured signatures and the authors’ interpretation of source mixtures should be kept distinct: the isotope values are reported results; the proportions and timing inferred from them depend on the study’s formation model.
Same broad layers, different planetary records
Both planets differentiated into core, mantle and crust as dense material separated from lighter material early in their histories. Sharing these broad layers does not mean they had the same internal structure in every detail or that they formed from identical ingredients. Mars is smaller, and its interior has retained compositional contrasts that are harder to read on Earth after long-term geological recycling.

On Earth, moving plates continually recycle crust, and convection in the mantle mixes material. Mars lacks that same degree of ongoing recycling, so ancient differences within its interior can remain more visible. NASA’s InSight science overviews explain why seismic measurements of Mars help investigate its internal structure and evolution: landing science overview and launch science overview.
Shared ingredients do not mean shared water histories
A 2013 NASA report on Martian meteorites found evidence that some water in Mars’s interior came from building blocks similar to those that supplied Earth. The same report distinguished that interior reservoir from water in Martian crust and atmosphere, which records a different history. Similarity in one source of water therefore does not establish that the planets began with equal water supplies or retained equal amounts.

Mars has geological evidence of flowing water and a warmer, wetter past, but that shorthand should not be mistaken for a complete or continuously settled account of its ancient climate. Its present thin atmosphere and the ancient terrain tell different parts of a long history; the surface record alone cannot provide a full measure of the planet’s original water inventory.

The strongest picture is a combination of measured isotope contrasts, broad geological structure and planetary models. Mars appears to have grown rapidly and preserved a distinct material signature. Earth’s inferred accretion included a contribution from isotopically rich outer Solar System material. Both bodies differentiated, but their different sizes and geological activity left different records for researchers to interpret.
