Osaka Metropolitan University (OMU) canceled classes from October 2 through October 8, 2026, after a major outage disabled core systems, campus networks, and university services. The university initially said the cause was under investigation; on October 6, The Record reported that OMU believed ransomware was responsible. That assessment was not presented as a final forensic conclusion, and the university had not confirmed that personal data was stolen.
Why did OMU cancel classes?
OMU said a large-scale failure was affecting its core system and leaving various university services unavailable. Its official notice placed the start of the disruption at about 00:30 on October 2, 2026. The university canceled classes through Thursday, October 8. OMU’s notice described the outage as ongoing while the cause was still being investigated.
The university also said its usual website and email systems were down. It directed students and other readers to its temporary notice site for updates while its regular site was unavailable.
Was Osaka Metropolitan University hit by ransomware?
Ransomware was OMU’s suspected cause, not a publicly established conclusion in the sources available. The university’s October 2 notice described a system failure and an investigation in progress. In an October 6 report, The Record said OMU believed ransomware caused the disruption and was investigating with outside cybersecurity specialists.

- The university hospital’s electronic medical record system continued to operate, and the veterinary clinical center remained operational, according to the report.
So, although the outage was broad, it did not mean that every university operation or service had stopped.
Was student or staff data exposed?
The Record reported that information associated with at least 130,000 current and former students, faculty members, and other people connected with OMU may have been exposed. Potentially affected information included names, addresses, and email addresses. This was a potential exposure count, not a confirmed count of people whose data had been stolen.

At the time of that report, OMU was still investigating whether information had leaked and had not confirmed personal-data theft. The reported figure should therefore be understood as the population potentially affected by exposure, not as proof that attackers exfiltrated records.
How many servers were affected?
The Record reported that about 500 servers stopped operating, attributing the figure to OMU officials. The university’s reviewed outage notice did not publish that server count; it comes from The Record’s October 6 account.
