Yes, the shrinking Dead Sea can change local weather, but it is not independently creating a runaway climate crisis. As the lake retreats, its surface evaporates less water into the lower atmosphere and the contrast between lake and land changes. A regional model found that removing the lake surface altered humidity, near-surface temperature, winds and convection. The modeled average precipitation change was small, however, and the experiment was not a forecast of real-world rainfall.
Why the Dead Sea is shrinking
The Dead Sea is a terminal lake: water flows in, mainly through the Jordan River, but there is no natural outlet. Its level reflects the balance between inflow and precipitation on one side, and evaporation and human water use on the other. When less water reaches the lake while evaporation continues, the shoreline retreats.
Climate influences that balance, but it is not the only driver. A 2021 Scientific Reports paper reports that upstream irrigation projects had reduced freshwater inflow from the Jordan River by about 90% compared with the natural situation before 1955. The same paper estimates net water use for potash production at about 250 million cubic metres per year. These are historical and publication-era estimates, not current 2026 flow or consumption readings.
How a smaller lake can affect local weather
The lake is a large, unusually low water surface beside dry land and steep terrain. Evaporation from it adds moisture to the air near the surface, while the contrast between water and land helps shape local temperature differences and wind circulation. A changing lake surface can therefore affect the conditions in which clouds and storms develop, without controlling the region’s weather on its own.

What the regional model found
Khodayar and Hoerner’s 2020 study compared regional simulations for 2003–2013. In one sensitivity experiment, the researchers represented the Dead Sea area as bare soil rather than as a lake. In that modeled case, less evaporation meant less moisture in the lower boundary layer and warmer conditions near the surface. The simulations also showed weaker updraughts, reduced deep-convective activity and changes in thermally driven winds.
The experiment’s mean precipitation reduction was about 0.5% across its modeled domain. Precipitation deviations went in both directions, and year-to-year variability was substantial. That figure is a result of this idealized comparison, not a measured decline in actual rainfall, a forecast for the basin, or evidence that every storm will weaken as the lake shrinks.

Why local winds matter
The Dead Sea valley already has complex wind patterns shaped by topography and by contrasts between water and land. A 2018 atmospheric study describes foehn events as affecting temperature, humidity, evaporation, aerosol distribution and visibility. This context helps explain why changing the lake surface can matter locally; it does not establish that shrinkage caused any particular extreme-weather event.
What the reported figures do—and do not—tell us
| Finding | Source and qualification | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 1.13 ± 0.13 metres per year | Metzger and colleagues’ 2018 Journal of Hydrology study; annual evaporation estimate based on two years of eddy-covariance measurements over the Dead Sea. | A measurement-period estimate, not a live annual reading. |
| About 1,000 millimetres per year | Estimate reported in a 2021 Scientific Reports paper. | A publication-era net evaporation estimate, not a verified 2026 value. |
| 516–537 metres below mean sea level | A 2017 study’s estimated lower equilibrium level under assumptions of present climate and no inflow; the authors associated the range with brine water activity of 0.46–0.39. | A conditional analysis, not a timed prediction of where or when the lake will stabilize. |
The estimates use different methods and assumptions, so they should not be treated as interchangeable current measurements. Together, they describe a water balance and possible long-term behavior; none supplies a current lake level or annual decline rate.

Which hazards are linked to retreat—and which are not
Sinkholes and subsidence
Sinkholes are a ground and groundwater hazard, not a direct atmospheric effect. As the shoreline retreats, groundwater conditions change and can dissolve underground salt layers; collapse may then occur in exposed areas. A 2021 study describes subsidence and hazardous sinkhole phenomena in areas affected by declining lake levels and changing hydro-meteorological conditions. The USGS Earthshots page also describes sinkholes forming in salty seabed exposed as the water retreats.
Heavy rain and flash floods
The basin can experience severe convective rainfall capable of producing flash floods. The 2020 model indicates that changing the lake surface can alter conditions relevant to convection, but it does not show that shrinkage will make every storm more dangerous or quantify a future change in flood risk. Rainfall hazards and shoreline collapse are separate processes and should not be conflated.

So, is the Dead Sea creating its own extreme climate?
It is more accurate to say the shrinking lake is changing part of its local climate system. Its retreat reduces a source of surface moisture and alters land–water contrasts that help shape local winds and convection. The modeled effects are meaningful enough to study, but their size and direction vary, and the precipitation result is not a real-world trend or direct forecast. The basin’s broader climate and water crisis also cannot be attributed to the lake alone: upstream water use, mineral production and climatic influences all matter.
