Ecash can make Bitcoin payments more private, but privacy does not by itself give users decentralized custody. Cashu uses blind signatures, yet users still depend on the mint that issued their tokens. Fedimint distributes custody among federation guardians who jointly control Bitcoin, but users rely on the federation’s threshold, availability and recovery arrangements. The available project documentation describes how these systems are designed; it does not establish that ecash adoption is rising or that every deployment is safe.
What ecash is—and how it differs from Bitcoin
Bitcoin is a public blockchain: transactions are recorded on-chain, and users can hold keys that authorize their own on-chain spending. Ecash is a form of digitally signed payment token. In the systems discussed here, users receive tokens from a mint and transfer them to someone else, who can present them to the mint for redemption or exchange.
That creates two distinct questions. Privacy asks whether the issuer can link a token’s issuance to its later use. Custody asks who controls the Bitcoin backing the system and what a user can do if the issuer or operators are unavailable. A cryptographic privacy feature does not answer the custody question.
Cashu: private tokens, mint-dependent redemption
Cashu describes itself as an open Bitcoin ecash protocol implemented by mints and wallets. Its protocol documentation describes a mint signing blinded token material, a holder transferring a token to a recipient, and that recipient presenting it for redemption. The protocol uses Blind Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange (BDHKE) and a spent-secret list to prevent tokens from being redeemed more than once.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Cashu’s blind-signature design is intended to prevent the mint from linking a withdrawal to a later spend. That is a privacy property, not proof of decentralized custody. A user who holds Cashu tokens still depends on the issuing mint to honor them. If a mint is unavailable or refuses redemption, blind signatures do not by themselves provide another way to recover the value.
Cashu says applications that follow its specifications can interoperate. That does not establish that every deployed mint or wallet has the same reliability, security or trustworthiness, nor does the reviewed documentation establish a common recovery guarantee across mints.

Fedimint: Bitcoin held by a federation
Fedimint is a framework for federated financial applications. Its current implementation uses a group of guardians to operate modules for Bitcoin, ecash and Lightning. Deposited Bitcoin backs ecash; deposits and withdrawals can use the Bitcoin blockchain or Lightning, according to the project’s architecture documentation.
The guardians coordinate through AlephBFT consensus. Bitcoin is held in a threshold multisignature wallet, so moving funds requires signatures from a threshold of guardians rather than a single operator acting alone. Fedimint’s “How Federations Work” documentation describes a federation as “a group of guardians running the Fedimint protocol together” and says that “No single guardian — or minority of guardians — can unilaterally move the federation’s Bitcoin.”

Threshold examples in Fedimint’s operator documentation include 3-of-4 and 5-of-7 guardian configurations. These are examples, not universal settings. The threshold distributes control, but it does not remove trust: Fedimint’s trust documentation says users trust guardians not to collude and warns that a majority could theoretically steal federation Bitcoin.
Cashu and Fedimint compared
| Question | Cashu | Fedimint |
|---|---|---|
| Basic structure | Open ecash protocol implemented by mints and wallets. | Federation of guardians operating Bitcoin, ecash and Lightning modules. |
| Who controls backing Bitcoin? | Users rely on the issuing mint to redeem its tokens; the reviewed documentation does not establish decentralized custody for the mint model. | Guardians collectively control Bitcoin through threshold multisignature custody. |
| Privacy mechanism described by the project | Chaumian blind signatures; the protocol documentation describes BDHKE. | Blindly signed ecash notes; project documentation describes unlinkability claims. |
| Key trust or recovery issue | Redemption depends on the mint; no common recovery guarantee across Cashu mints is established in the reviewed documentation. | Recovery depends on threshold keys and at least one guardian database; collusion by a majority is a stated risk. |
| Integration | Applications can implement the Cashu protocol specifications. | Modules and an SDK support application integration, including Lightning routes. |
These are protocol-level distinctions, not a security ranking of every Cashu mint or Fedimint federation. The official project materials describe intended properties; the available evidence does not establish independent comparative security audits or adoption levels.

What happens if Fedimint guardians go offline—or collude?
If guardians go offline
Fedimint’s operator guide says consensus halts if a majority of guardians disconnect, until enough return. The threshold required to move Bitcoin also means that a federation needs enough participating guardians to meet its configured threshold. A federation can therefore face an availability problem even if no guardian is acting maliciously.
If guardians collude
A threshold prevents one guardian or a minority from unilaterally moving federation Bitcoin under the documented model. It does not prevent a majority from potentially stealing funds. The actual assumption depends on the federation’s configuration and who operates its guardians.

How recovery works
According to Fedimint’s operator guide, recovery requires at least the threshold number of keys and at least one guardian database. Guardian backups are encrypted with a password. These requirements mean users should understand who operates the guardians and how federation recovery is arranged before depositing Bitcoin; recovery is not guaranteed simply because a user possesses ecash tokens.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What operating a Fedimint node involves
Fedimint’s operator documentation lists these minimum and recommended resources for a node. The figures are project documentation requirements, not independent hardware benchmarks; the source publication year is not stated.
| Resource | Minimum listed | Recommended listed |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 1 GB | 2 GB |
| Disk | 10 GB | Not stated |
| CPU | 1 core | 2 cores |
The guide also estimates about one second of added payment latency in most real-world scenarios; this is a project-published estimate, not an independently measured figure for every federation or payment. The architecture documentation describes the implementation as modular and continuously changing, so operators should consult current project documentation for deployment details.
Fedimint can run on a home server, an old laptop, a cloud VPS or a Raspberry Pi-class single-board computer. A Raspberry Pi is an optional platform, not a requirement; the listed resource requirements alone do not establish that any particular model is suitable.

How to assess an ecash deployment before using it
- Identify the issuer or guardians. With Cashu, find out which mint issued the tokens. With Fedimint, identify the federation and who operates its guardians.
- Ask who controls the backing Bitcoin. Distinguish reliance on one mint from threshold control shared among guardians; neither is the same as personally holding all signing authority.
- Understand failure and recovery paths. Ask what happens if the mint or federation is unavailable, and, for Fedimint, whether threshold keys and a guardian database can be accessed for recovery.
- Keep the amount proportionate to the trust model. Ecash may be useful for payments, but convenience and privacy properties do not eliminate issuer, operator or availability risks.
- Separate project claims from deployment evidence. Official documentation explains the intended design; it does not establish the security or reliability of every wallet, mint, federation or operator.
Does ecash challenge decentralized custody?
Fedimint offers a form of distributed custody: several guardians share control under a threshold, rather than one guardian having unilateral authority. That is meaningfully different from a single mint, but it remains a federation trust model, with availability and collusion assumptions. Cashu’s privacy design can make token use harder for a mint to link to issuance, but the user still depends on that mint for redemption. Neither system should be described as trust-free simply because it uses blind signatures or open software.
