Unlocking a game’s frame rate can make it look smoother while changing how it plays. In some older games, movement, physics, or collision checks were tied to a fixed frame cadence, so raising that cadence can make the game run too fast or cause other timing problems. But rendered FPS is not always the same as the rate at which the game simulation advances, and the effects depend on the specific title.

Why does unlocking the frame rate make an old game run too fast or break its physics?

A game can update an object by a fixed amount each time it processes a frame. If the game assumes each frame represents a particular slice of time, processing more frames per second can also mean applying that movement more times per second. The result may be a character that moves too quickly or gameplay that no longer follows its original timing.

Not every failure is simply a speed increase. Collision checks, animation events, and other game logic can also rely on assumptions about when updates happen. A higher frame cadence may expose those assumptions even if the game does not appear to run uniformly faster.

GOG describes this class of issue in its account of restoring Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The article says some games from that era had game speed and physics tied to a fixed frame rate, and reports characters clipping through geometry, falling through the world, and ladders failing when collision checks behaved poorly at higher rates. Those are examples from that restoration account, not a checklist of problems every older game will have. GOG’s account of preserving Sands of Time also notes that field of view and game speed could be hardcoded to a fixed frame rate and 4:3 resolution.

Rendered FPS is not necessarily the game’s simulation rate

Rendered FPS describes how often a game produces or presents images. A physics tick, or fixed update, is a scheduled step in the simulation. These schedules can be separate: a game may render at a variable rate while advancing physics at fixed intervals.

Unity’s documentation distinguishes rendered frames from fixed updates and explains that a game may run multiple fixed updates to catch up. Its time-management documentation also describes time scale as a control over how quickly game time progresses. These are separate concepts: changing the display cadence, physics schedule, or game clock does not necessarily have the same effect. A fixed-update design helps separate simulation from rendering, but it does not automatically repair a particular legacy game.

When the physics and rendering schedules are out of step, the mismatch can be visible as jitter. Godot’s physics interpolation documentation explains how rendering between physics updates can smooth that presentation. Jitter is therefore another possible symptom, distinct from a game running too quickly or collisions failing. Unity’s time and frame-rate documentation, Unity’s fixed-update documentation, and Godot’s physics interpolation guide describe these timing relationships.

Emulators have another clock to consider

In an emulator, the displayed frame counter should not automatically be read as a measure of visual smoothness alone. PCSX2 explains that the emulated console’s playback rate is tied to the console’s overall speed, including AI, sound, and physics. A change that affects emulation speed can therefore alter the whole game experience, not just how often images appear on screen. PCSX2’s FAQ discusses this distinction.

What to do if a higher frame rate causes problems

  1. Identify the symptom. Note whether movement speeds up, collisions become unreliable, physics become unstable, or the image jitters. These point to different timing issues.
  2. Return to the last known-good cap or setting. If the problem began after unlocking or raising the cap, restore the prior setting or use the game’s own supported frame-rate options.
  3. Check guidance for the exact game and platform. Look for developer support notes or a credible restoration or compatibility page. A fix for one title is not a universal recommendation.
  4. Apply only a title-specific fix that addresses the observed issue. A display cap, physics-rate change, time-scale adjustment, and emulator playback setting affect different parts of timing; do not treat them as interchangeable.

Support can be game-specific even when a title has high-frame-rate options. For example, Mobius Digital’s support material illustrates that physics rate can be a consideration for a particular game; it does not establish a general setting for older games. Mobius Digital’s support page is an example of why checking the game maker’s own guidance matters.

There is no universal safe setting

Some games can render smoothly at a higher rate without tying their simulation to every rendered frame; others may have timing assumptions or defects that make a higher cadence unreliable. The practical question is not whether 60 FPS is inherently safe, but whether the specific game supports that frame rate and keeps its simulation, physics, and other timed systems behaving correctly.
