EDG as a corporation is winding down, but the frontend is continuing as an open-source project, with the C++ Alliance serving as its nonprofit fiscal sponsor and project home. The official transition announcement describes the release and how users can take part.
What changed with EDG?
The source code for the EDG C++ frontend was published at github.com/edgcpp/compiler on September 30, 2026. The release uses the LLVM license. The transition separates the future of the company from the future of its software: the corporation is going away, while the frontend is intended to remain usable and continue development as an open-source project.
EDG describes the frontend as technology used in compilers, developer tools, and commercial products. The announcement includes statements from customers, which illustrate specific uses but are not independent adoption measurements. Bruce Duncan, Veracode’s Director of Software Engineering, says Veracode relies on the frontend for static application security testing of customers’ C++ applications. Nicolas Bertolotti, a Senior Team Leader and Principal Development Engineer at MathWorks, says EDG has been at the heart of MathWorks’ C and C++ analysis and instrumentation solutions for more than 20 years.
Can organizations continue to use EDG commercially?
The announcement says commercial products can continue to use EDG under the LLVM license and that organizations with existing agreements can continue under those terms. This is not a statement that use is unrestricted: the applicable license terms still matter, and existing contracts may affect a particular organization. Review the license text and any relevant agreement for a specific use case; this summary is not individualized legal advice.

Who maintains the project and how is it governed?
Experienced EDG engineers are the initial maintainers. The project’s stated aim is to open development to community contributors while preserving the technical quality associated with EDG. The C++ Alliance provides nonprofit fiscal sponsorship and an open-source home; it is not described as the sole technical decision-maker.
John Spicer chairs the Fiscal Sponsorship Committee, which oversees development alongside volunteers from the EDG user community. C++ Alliance CEO Harry Bott characterizes the organization’s role this way: “Our job at the C++ Alliance is to support the project, not run it.”

What does the announcement say about standards support?
Maintaining standard conformance is a stated priority, with community support expected to help sustain it. The announcement does not provide a finalized roadmap, a specific future C++ standard target, or a release schedule. Those details are to be shared once finalized, so the transition announcement alone cannot establish when particular standards or features will be supported.
