Many mesh Wi-Fi systems do have antennas; they’re simply built inside each node’s enclosure rather than mounted as visible rods. But that is not universal: some mesh routers use external antennas. The design varies by model, and antenna appearance alone does not tell you how well a system will cover your home.
Mesh nodes still need antennas
Every mesh node needs antennas to send and receive Wi-Fi signals. On many systems, the antennas are concealed inside the housing, so a smooth, compact-looking node can still contain several antennas.
For example, TP-Link lists four high-gain internal antennas and two smart internal antennas in the Deco X90. TP-Link says the smart antennas detect other Deco units to help establish a stronger backhaul connection, and the product also supports beamforming. These are specifications for this model—not proof that every mesh system uses the same layout or that internal antennas perform better than external ones. TP-Link Deco X90 specifications.
Some mesh systems do have visible antennas
External antennas are a model-level design choice, not something mesh systems universally lack. Linksys lists two adjustable external antennas on its MR5500 mesh router. The model also supports beamforming and can be placed on a desktop or mounted on a wall. Linksys MR5500 product page.

These manufacturer specifications are not a head-to-head performance test. They show that antenna placement differs between products, not which design is better.
Do hidden antennas make mesh Wi-Fi weaker?
Not by themselves. The visible shape of a router does not establish its coverage or speed, and the cited product pages do not provide a controlled comparison of internal and external antenna designs. Real-world wireless throughput and coverage can vary with network conditions, client-device limits, building materials, obstacles, traffic, and where devices are located. TP-Link lists these kinds of factors in its product qualifications. TP-Link Deco X90 specifications.

When comparing systems, look at model-specific radio specifications, coverage information, placement options, backhaul choices, compatible nodes, and your home’s layout. Don’t choose a system—or assume it will perform poorly—based only on whether you can see its antennas.
What matters more: node placement and backhaul
Good placement helps mesh nodes maintain a useful connection to one another. Follow the setup guidance for your specific system; recommendations differ by manufacturer and model.

For TP-Link Deco units
- Use the app’s layout guidance and check the connection strength between nodes.
- Place units at the same height in open areas, away from walls and metal objects, and avoid sources of interference identified in the product guidance.
- If your home has Ethernet wiring, consider wired backhaul. TP-Link describes it as more stable and faster than wireless backhaul.
These are TP-Link’s recommendations for Deco systems; check your own system’s manual and app for its instructions. TP-Link Deco placement and Ethernet backhaul guidance.
For NETGEAR Nighthawk kits
NETGEAR says that at least one satellite in some kits must remain within range of the router. If the example layouts do not fit your home, it recommends placing a satellite near the center of the home. Check your kit’s guidance for its specific requirements. NETGEAR satellite placement guidance.

Can you add antennas to a mesh node?
Don’t open a node or try to add antennas unless the manufacturer explicitly supports it for that model. ASUS’s general router FAQ cautions against bending or disassembling non-detachable antennas. It also notes that extension cables on detachable antennas can cause signal loss or interference. That general advice does not establish compatibility for every mesh product. ASUS antenna guidance.
