A solar-powered pump fills storage tanks that supply all 36 village families, while separate household solar-and-battery kits provide lighting and charging for small devices. The systems reduce reliance on diesel generators, but they do not prevent drought or guarantee water availability if local sources run short.
How solar is helping Nova Sociedade secure water
During the historic 2024 drought, people in Nova Sociedade walked as far as 20 kilometers (about 12.4 miles) searching for water, according to the Associated Press. Community leader Tiago Silva recalled, “At daybreak, our struggle would begin.” The Arapiuns River is the community’s route to the outside world, making water and fuel difficult to access when conditions are harsh.
In June 2026, solar panels began powering pumps that fill storage tanks with clean water for all 36 families in the village. The system was supplied by the Brazilian nonprofit Saúde e Alegria, which AP reported had installed similar water technology in 29 other communities. The report does not specify the Nova Sociedade system’s capacity, water output, pump model, or cost, so its results should not be generalized to other sites.
Solar pumping can support water access by using sunlight to run pumps and move water into storage. The tanks provide a reserve for households, but the panels cannot create water: a system still depends on a source with enough water and equipment suited to local conditions. The available reporting does not quantify how long Nova Sociedade’s stored supply lasts during drought.

Why replace diesel in remote villages?
Before the new systems, Nova Sociedade relied on diesel generators for basic electricity. AP describes the fuel as costly and polluting, and generator power as limited and unreliable. Buying fuel involves a boat trip of nearly three hours to Santarém. Solar can reduce dependence on that supply chain for the uses it serves; the report does not give a measured reduction in fuel use or emissions for this village.
Environmentalist Caetano Scannavino, who manages Saúde e Alegria, said: “This technology uses the power of the sun and can replace other ways of generating electricity that often require clearing the forest or burning fuel, the very practices driving global warming.” Solar systems still need suitable equipment, upkeep, and local planning; the account does not establish how Nova Sociedade’s installations perform in every season.

Water pumps and household kits are different systems
In September 2026, households received separate solar-power systems donated by Schneider Electric through Saúde e Alegria. AP says the kits include batteries for nighttime lighting and provide enough electricity to charge phones and other small devices. They are not the same installation as the community water pumps and should not be assumed to power large appliances or village-scale infrastructure.

Other reported uses of solar in the region
Solar can support more than household lighting, although each installation is designed for a particular need. AP also describes a clinic using solar power for vaccine refrigeration, telemedicine, and basic equipment; a school where solar replaced a noisy diesel generator and enabled refrigeration; and a solar-and-battery system at an açaí processor intended to address production constraints associated with diesel power.

At Sao Benedito School in Surucua, principal Rosenilce Cruz described the quieter setting after the generator was replaced: “Today, all you hear are the children and the birds,” she said. Cruz also said the school’s steady electricity let it store fresh protein for meals: “Today, our children’s meals are no longer based on canned foods but on fresh sources of protein. We now have a place to store that food because electricity is available 24 hours a day,” she said.
How these projects fit into Brazil’s energy effort
Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy says Decree 11,648/2023 established the Energias da Amazônia program. Its stated goals are to reduce diesel use and greenhouse gas emissions in isolated electricity systems while maintaining supply quality and security. The ministry says more than 3.1 million people are served by such systems and lists auctions and authorizations, supply-solution contracting, and CCC reimbursement mechanisms among the program’s implementation tools.

AP reported that off-grid installations in remote Amazon areas grew from 105 in 2020 to more than 11,000 in 2022 and exceeded 100,000 by 2026, citing official data. IEMA researcher Fabio Galdino dos Santos told AP, “It’s fair to say that nearly all of these are solar installations.” The story also reported IEMA’s estimate that about 1 million people in the Amazon region still lack electricity access. These figures are reported by AP; the underlying system counts and estimate are not independently verified here. AP additionally reported that more than 99% of Brazil’s 214 million residents had electricity access in the 2022 census, a national figure that can obscure gaps in remote communities.

AP reported that El Niño is expected to affect the year and can worsen drought in the Amazon. Nova Sociedade’s pumps and household kits are practical preparations for water and electricity stresses: they provide specific services without depending entirely on diesel deliveries. They are not evidence that drought will be avoided, nor does the reporting show that the installations can maintain water access if the source itself becomes depleted.

For a community considering a similar project, the core question is not simply how many panels to install. The design has to match the intended use—pumping and storing water, lighting homes, powering a clinic, or supporting communications—and local conditions. The documented projects do not provide comparable costs, reliability rates, or emissions measurements, so a numerical comparison between systems would be misleading.
Community-led solar projects beyond Brazil
Other initiatives illustrate how remote solar projects can be tailored to local priorities. Amazon Conservation Team’s 2018 report described pico-PV systems in Indigenous partner communities in Colombia’s middle and lower Caquetá River basins. Communities selected systems for lighting and one phone or radio charging point per household; the organization reported that 328 solar lamps delivered in less than a year benefited 1,776 people. Those are historical project figures, not a current deployment count.
Amazon Watch describes its Power to the Protectors program as combining solar power with satellite internet and radio, maintenance training, and community ownership of hardware. Its page reports a Peru project with FECONAU and Empowered by Light across 15 communities, benefiting more than 6,000 people. Amazon Watch says the installations are co-created with Indigenous partners; these are the organization’s own program claims, not a like-for-like performance comparison with Nova Sociedade.
